Titans Drop Road Match at UC Irvine, 3-1

Kaia Herweg sets season-high nine kills, Zariah Crosby powers Titans to second-set win

Box Score IRVINE, Calif. — The Cal State Fullerton women's volleyball team fell to UC Irvine in four sets (17-25, 25-19, 17-25, 17-25) Saturday night. The Titans moved to 5-10 overall and 0-2 in Big West play. 

Kaia Herweg led the Titans on the attack with a season-high nine kills, while Zariah Crosby followed with eight kills. As a team, the Titans recorded 40 kills with a .030 hitting percentage. 

Fullerton dropped the opening set, 25-17, allowing UC Irvine to take a 1-0 match lead. Kaia Herweg disrupted a 5-0 run by the Anteaters with an early kill. She then brought the set within two at 6-2 with a kill down the line. Consecutive violations by UC Irvine allowed the Titans to tie the set and take a 10-9 lead, but the Anteaters responded with a five point run to push ahead 14-10. The Anteaters worked to a 19-12 advantage before Bella Risling put away a kill through the middle and a block assist by Zariah Crosby and Herweg cut Fullerton's deficit to 19-14. UC Irvine secured the set win with a kill after back-to-back errors by the Titans gave them a 24-17 lead. 



The Titans responded with a 25-19 victory to even the match at 1-1, marking their first set win in conference play this season. Fullerton jumped to a 7-2 lead on a four-point scoring run highlighted by two kills from Herweg and one from Crosby. Crosby then recorded a solo block, the 17th of her career, and a block assist with Italia Bernal for a 9-3 lead. Kills from Parys Taylor and Bernal extended Fullerton's lead to 15-6. Crosby tallied consecutive kills for an 18-10 lead, while Herweg added two kills for a 21-11 advantage. UC Irvine cut Fullerton's lead to 24-19 before Ava Pond recorded a crosscourt kill to seal the win. 



Fullerton fell 25-17 in the third set. UC Irvine opened on a 5-0 run, but the Titans fought to tie it at 6-6 behind kills from Sofia Shine, Bernal and Crosby. A kill from Pond brought the match within one, 12-11, after the Anteaters pulled ahead. UC Irvine regained its momentum, working to a seven-point run for an 18-11 lead. Back-to-back kills from Marisa Nakata brought the set within five, 21-16, but the Anteaters took advantage of 10 Fullerton attacking errors to retake a 2-1 match lead. 

UC Irvine controlled a majority of the fourth set, sealing the match win in a 25-17 victory. The Titans found an early 3-0 lead, highlighted by two kills from Risling, but attacking errors quickly allowed the Anteaters to tie it at 3-3. UC Irvine jumped to a 20-12 lead before Shine put away a kill. Attacking errors by the Anteaters cut Fullerton's deficit to 23-17, while two errors by the Titans closed the set for UC Irvine. 

The Titans are scheduled to visit Cal State Bakersfield on Friday, Oct. 2. First serve is set for 6:00 p.m. PT.
