Volleyball Defeats Bethune-Cookman in Straight Sets, Charleston Southern in Five

Bella Risling (28 kills) and Marisa Nakata (21 kills) power Titans to 2-0 start at Playa Bowls Invitational

CHARLESTON, S.C. – The Cal State Fullerton women's volleyball team opened the Playa Bowl Invitational, hosted by Charleston Southern, with a straight-set victory over Bethune-Cookman (25-16, 25-16, 25-23) and a five-set comeback win over Charleston Southern (22-25, 28-26, 15-25, 25-20, 15-12) on Friday. The Titans improved to 4-4 overall and 2-0 at the tournament. 

As a team, Fullerton recorded 100 kills with a .204 hitting percentage across both games. Bella Risling tallied a team-high 28 kills followed by Marisa Nakata with 21 kills. Italia Bernal led the Titans with 24 digs and 75 assists, surpassing 240 assists overall.

Risling led the Titans offensively with 12 kills. Bernal recorded 28 assists, including her 195th assist of the season. Fullerton outperformed the Wildcats with 54 digs, 44 kills, 42 assists, five blocks and three service aces. 

The Titans opened the match with a 25-16 victory over Bethune-Cookman. The offense was powered by Risling, Nakata and Hannah Hass, who each tallied four kills. Fullerton cruised to a 16-8 lead behind a kill from Risling and two kills from Emilia Graham. 

The second set featured nine ties before Fullerton took the set in a 25-16 win. Parys Taylor recorded back-to-back kills for a 12-10 advantage before extending Fullerton's lead to 14-10 with a third kill. Two kills from Ava Pond and a service ace by Taylor pushed the Titans to a 20-12 lead, pressuring the Wildcats to take a timeout. Bethune-Cookman responded with a 3-0 scoring run, but the Titans capitalized on three errors by the Wildcats to take a 2-0 match lead. 

Fullerton secured a 25-23 win against the Wildcats in the third set. Bethune-Cookman worked to a 9-7 lead, but the Titans used a 6-0 scoring run to gain a 13-9 advantage. Sofia Shine, Graham and Taylor added kills late in the set for a 23-19 advantage before the Wildcats cut Fullerton's lead to 23-22 on back-to-back kills. Risling connected two kills fed by Bernal to seal the win and complete the straight-set victory. 

Cal St. Fullerton 3, Charleston Southern 2

The Titans dropped the opening set, 25-22, to the Buccaneers despite the Titans posting a .353 hitting percentage in the frame. Risling led Fullerton's offense with five kills and was followed by four kills each from Shine and Nakata. The Titans fended off three set points behind two Risling kills, but an attack error handed Charleston Southern the win for a 1-0 match lead. 

Fullerton evened the match at 1-1 after battling through a close-fought second set that extended into extra points, 28-26. Nakata and Risling found a 24-23 lead with back-to-back kills. A solo block by Hass pushed the Titans to a 27-26 lead, and Nakata sealed the win with her 10th kill of the match. 



Charleston Southern controlled the third set, regaining a 2-1 match lead with a 25-15 set win. The Titans only found six kills, including a kill by Hass that cut Fulelrton's deficit to one point, 16-15. The Buccaneers responded with a 9-0 scoring run to silence the Titans. \

The Titans responded in the fourth set with a 25-20 victory to force a deciding set. Zariah Crosby, Hass, Nakata and Risling powered the Titans with kills to a 20-16 advantage. The momentum shift stayed in favor of the Titans as Crosby and Hass combined at the net to deny the Buccaneers entry. Kills from Risling and a service ace from Nakata earned Fullerton the set point before Hass shut the door with a kill. 



Fullerton completed the comeback with a 15-12 victory in the fifth set. Nakata led the Titans with three kills, while Shine added two. Fullerton hit .235 in the deciding set and held Charleston Southern to 12 points to improve to a .500 winning percentage. 



The Titans conclude the weekend against The Citadel on Saturday at the Playa Bowls Invitational. First serve is scheduled for 9:00 a.m. PT.
