Cal State Fullerton

HUNTSVILLE, Texas — The Cal State Fullerton women's volleyball team fell to Miami (Ohio) in four sets (25-23, 18-25, 3-25, 16-25) at the Bearkat Invitational on Saturday morning. The Titans closed opening weekend with a 1-2 overall record. 

Arianna Ellis led the Titans offensively, contributing 11 kills on .212 hitting. Hannah Hass recorded the first solo block by a Titan this season in the first, while Bella Risling remained a prominent player in the Titans' successes early in the match. Risling added eight kills to her team-leading 29 kills tallied during the opening weekend, earning herself All-Tournament honors. 

The Titans opened the match with a 25-23 victory. Ellis recorded five kills on .556 hitting in the first set, starting with a kill assisted by Kaieva Christensen for a 1-0 lead. Miami (OH) rallied to a 15-11 advantage, but the Titans responded with a 7-0 scoring run to overtake the Redhawks 18-15. The run featured two kills and a service ace by Risling, a kill by Sofia Shine, and a solo block by Hass. Ellis added three kills late in the set, while a service ace from Jaiden Mojica sealed the set win. 

Miami (OH) evened the match at 1-1, taking the second set in a 25-18 comeback win. The Titans used a 4-0 scoring run to take a brief 8-7 lead in the set. Miami (OH) disrupted the run with a kill, but a Titan kill, ace, and block assist positioned the Titans in front 11-8, pressuring the Redhawks to call a timeout. Miami (OH) evened the score at 16-16 before taking a 22-18 lead on a series of Fullerton attacking errors. The Redhawks used a 5-0 scoring run to secure the set win and tie the match. 

The Redhawks took a 2-1 match lead after controlling the third set. The Titans fell into a 16-0 deficit before Ellis registered a kill fed from Italia Bernal. Hass and Bernal added a kill for the Titans, but Miami (OH) quickly closed the set in a 25-3 victory. 

Fullerton showed resilient efforts in the fourth set but fell short in a 25-16 loss. The Titans brought the set within three points, 7-4, but allowed the Redhawks to extend their lead to 12-4 on a 5-0 scoring run. The Titans continued to battle with two kills from Shine and Ava Pond before Miami (OH) completed the reverse sweep in four sets. 

The Titans will travel to Spokane, Washington, for the Gonzaga Invitational on Sept. 3-5. Fullerton will face Gonzaga on Friday, Eastern Washington on Saturday, and wrap up the weekend against Oral Roberts on Sunday.
