Softball Defeats San Diego in Midweek Matchup

The Titans record 10 runs on 12 hits in 10-3 road victory

SAN DIEGO, Calif. – Cal State Fullerton Softball defeated the University of San Diego, 10-3, in a Tuesday matchup at the Reggie Smith Softball Complex. The Titans improved to 28-12 overall and stand 16-2 heading into conference play at Cal State Bakersfield.

San Diego found an early 1-0 lead on a sacrifice fly in the first inning, but the Titans quickly responded by loading the bases in the second. The Titans turned to pinch-hitter Annika Sogsti, who tied the game at 1-1 with a sacrifice fly.

The Titans pulled ahead of the Toreros, 3-1, in the top of the third inning with a single up the middle by Sarah Coccillos. Fullerton opened the inning with an infield single by Sarah Perez and a bunt by Colby McClinton. Alexia Lopez advanced both runners into scoring position with a sacrifice bunt, setting the stage for Coccillos.

The Toreros tied the game at 3-3 in the bottom of the third with a triple under the glove on a diving Maggie Paulovich in right field.

Fullerton retook a 6-3 lead in the fourth on three consecutive singles into shallow center by Perez, McClinton and Lopez. Coccillos added a run with a sacrifice fly, and Lopez scored on a wild pitch for an 8-3 advantage.

McClinton and Lopez both recorded their third hits of the game in the fifth, plating two runs on a double and a single to secure the 10-3 victory.

Eva Hurtado pitched four complete innings before Leanna Garcia entered to finish the final three frames. Hurtado improved to 9-4 overall and Garcia earned her fifth save of the season.

The Titans resume Big West play on the road at Cal State Bakersfield April 18-19. The series is scheduled to open on Saturday with a doubleheader at 12 p.m. and 2:30 p.m.
