FULLERTON, Calif. – The Cal State Fullerton softball team opened the 20th Judi Garman Classic with a 3-2 win over BYU on Thursday. The Titans improved to 7-9 overall and stand 1-0 in the tournament.
As a team, Fullerton posted a .316 batting average while setting two season highs with six walks and three stolen bases.
The Titans jumped to an early 2-0 lead over the Cougars in the first inning when
Colby McClinton (2-for-3, R, 2 RBI) hit her third home run of the season, scoring
Sarah Perez. McClinton leads the Titans in numerous categories, including batting (.380), slugging percentage (.700), runs scored (11), hits (19), RBI (16) and total bases (35). Her three home runs are tied for most on the team with
Sarah Coccillos.
Perez (1-for-2, R, RBI, BB) extended Fullerton's lead to 3-2 in the second inning with a quality at-bat that ended in an RBI single, driving in
Kate Verhoef, who had previously walked and stolen third base.
BYU's bats remained quiet through three innings before a hit to right field resulted in extra bases and two runs, cutting Fullerton's lead to 3-2.
Trisha McCleskey picked up her fifth win of the season in her eighth start in the circle for the Titans. She faced 17 batters over four frames, allowing two runs on four hits and two walks. The Big West Pitcher of the Week recorded three strikeouts and threw 42 strikes on 65 pitches.
Eva Hurtado earned her first save of the year after pitching three innings in relief. After inheriting a runner with no outs in the fifth inning, Hurtado escaped the inning with two strikeouts and a ball hit into the outfield. She pitched around two base runners in the sixth before securing the win in the seventh.
The Titans return to action on Friday night against Oregon State at the Judi Garman Classic.
