FULLERTON, Calif. – The Cal State Fullerton softball team fell 6-1 to Japan's Women's National Softball Team on Tuesday night at the Mini International Tournament.
Team Japan and Team Mexico, who faced CSUN and Cal State Fullerton at the Mini International Tournament, are pursuing qualification for the LA28 Summer Olympic Games, which will be hosted in Oklahoma City. Japan is the reigning gold medalist after a 2–0 victory over the United States at the 2020 Tokyo Olympics and as the 2024 World Cup champion following a 6–1 win over the U.S. in the final.
Trisha McCleskey opened the midweek exhibition game with a strikeout and held Team Japan to two scoreless innings with one extra-base hit.
Japan took a 1-0 lead in the third inning on two hits, a walk and a throwing error.
Leanna Garcia pitched two innings in relief, striking out two batters while allowing one unearned run.
The Titans tied the game at 1-1 in the fourth inning when
Sarah Coccillos knocked a base hit to right-center field.
Micayla Turi, who pinch ran for
Alexia Lopez after she doubled, scored on the play.
Hana Winton was charged with the loss after entering the game tied at 1-1. Japan retook a 3-1 lead in the fifth inning, scoring two runs on two hits and another throwing error. Japan extended its lead to 6-1 in the seventh inning on three hits and a walk.
The Titans turn their focus to the upcoming Mary Nutter Collegiate Classic, hosted at Big League Dreams in Cathedral City from Feb. 19-21. Fullerton will face No. 4 Oklahoma on Thursday at 5:30 p.m. before facing Rutgers at 8 p.m.
