NORTHRIDGE, Calif. — The Cal State Fullerton women's volleyball team fell to CSUN in straight sets (22-25, 20-25, 22-25) Saturday evening. The Titans (5-12, 0-4) extended their losing streak to a season-high six matches as they continue to search for their first Big West win.
As a team, the Titans recorded 29 kills with a .084 hitting percentage compared with CSUN's 44 kills and .272 hitting percentage. Freshman outside hitter
Sofia Shine led the Titans offensively with eight kills, while sophomore middle blocker
Hannah Hass posted four block assists for the defense.Â
Fullerton dropped the opening set 25-22. The Titans hit a match-high .118 in the first set with 11 kills.
Zariah Crosby and
Bella Risling both recorded a solo block in the set. Shine tied the set at 5-5 with a kill, but CSUN used a four-point run to lead 9-5. Trailing 15-12 at the break, the Titans answered with a 6-2 run to take an 18-17 lead over the Matadors. The run featured two kills from Shine, one from Crosby and a service ace from
Italia Bernal. A late 5-0 push gave the Matadors a 24-20 advantage before closing the set on a kill for a 1-0 match lead.Â
The Titans fell to CSUN in the second set, 25-20. Shine led the Titans with four kills in the set, while Taylor hit 1.000 with three kills. Fullerton matched their 11 kills in the first set, but fell victim to nine team errors. The Titans rallied to a 19-16 deficit after trailing 17-9. The 8-3 run featured two kills and a service ace from Taylor.
Neeva Gaine contributed two kills off the bench to keep the set within three at 21-18, but attacking errors and a service error by the Titans allowed the Matadors to secure a 2-0 match lead.Â
CSUN completed the sweep in a 25-22 victory in the third set. The Titans tallied seven kills compared with CSUN's 17. Fullerton opened the set with a 2-0 lead behind kills from Hass and Taylor. The Matadors took advantage of Fullerton's attacking errors to push to a 20-15 advantage, but the Titans cut their deficit to 20-18 on a 3-0 run, highlighted by a Shine kill and a
Kaieva Christensen service ace. Hass combined at the net with Oster and Gaine, and found a late kill to bring the set within one point at 22-21, but the Matadors closed the match with a final kill.Â
The Titans are set to host their home opener on Friday, Oct. 9, against Cal Poly at 6:00 p.m. They will conclude the weekend at home against UC Santa Barbara on Saturday, Oct. 10, at 2:00 p.m. Â
