Hot Start from Deep Not Enough at UCSB

After dominating from the three-point line in the first half, the Titans couldn’t stay hot, resulting in a 69-83 loss at UCSB.

Santa Barbara, Calif. – The Cal State Fullerton Titans paid a visit to the UC Santa Barbara Gauchos on Saturday evening in hopes to sweep the season series. The game did not end in the Titans' favor, leading to a series split after the 69-83 loss on the road.

After starting the game with a seven-point deficit, Davis White put the Titans on the board with a shot from downtown which set the tone for Fullerton's first half. CSF found themselves trailing UCSB by as many as 18 with three minutes left in the first half, before putting the pieces together and chopping the deficit down to nine going into halftime. The Titans posted 29 points in the first half while the Gauchos tallied 38.

Fullerton relied heavily on the three-point ball to keep them in the game during the first half. CSF was seven for 12 from the three-point line, keeping them within reach of the Gauchos who went five for 16 from beyond the arc.

Bailey Nunn and White led the Titans in the first half with six points each; both nabbing two long balls.

Fullerton posted 40 points in the second half, but UCSB seemed unstoppable, logging 45 to stay on top of the Titans. CSF entered the second half down by nine before allowing the Gauchos to go on a 15-point scoring run, giving them a 27-point lead over the Titans with eight minutes remaining.

The Titans weren't as successful as the first half from beyond the arc, only nailing two of their 11 attempts. Both teams recorded eight turnovers, but the Gauchos took advantage and turned those into 16 points, while the Titans only recorded four from turnovers.

Titans freshman, KJ Garris led the team with 18 points on the night. Garris and White each had a team-high five rebounds. White and Joshua Ward were the two other Titans to tally double digits on the road.

The Titans return to Titan Gym on Thursday, Feb. 5 at 7 p.m. to host UC Riverside.
