IRVINE, Calif. ā Cal State Fullerton held No. 12 UC Irvine to just two runs on three hits, defeating the Anteaters 4-2 Friday night to secure the series win on the road.Ā
With the win the Titans improve to 29-24 on the year and 19-10 in Big West play. The Titans are locked into the No. 3 seed in the Big West Championship beginning next week at Goodwin Field.Ā
In his second consecutive weekend start and fourth start of the season, Jayden Harper pitched another gem. The junior threw six shutout innings and had a no-hitter broken up with two outs in the sixth inning. After throwing five no-hit innings against Hawaii last weekend, Harper pitched 10.2 consecutive innings without allowing a hit. Harper earned the win for the Titans to improve to 3-0 on the year.Ā
Fullerton took a 1-0 lead in the top of third inning on a productive infield out by Matthew Bardowell to score Paul Contreras from second base.Ā
The Titans added a run in the fourth inning to extend the lead to 2-0. With two outs and Marcos Rosales at second, Cam Burdick hit a bloop single to center field to score Rosales.Ā
Fullerton extended its lead to 3-0 in the seventh on a wild pitch that allowed Rosales to score from third base. Rosales went 3-for-4 Friday night with two runs.Ā
UC Irvine finally got on the board in the eighth inning with a solo home run to cut the Titans lead to 3-1.Ā
The Titans immediately responded, scoring one run on an RBI double by Contreras to bring home Waldie Perez from second. Contreras went 3-for-4 on the night with a run and an RBI.Ā
The Anteaters scored one more run in the ninth on another solo home run to cut the Titans final score to 4-2.Ā
Andrew Wright closed out the game to earn his 10th save of the season, the most saves in a single season by a Titan since Brett Conine recorded 10 in 2018.Ā
The Titans and No. 12 UC Irvine meet for game three and the regular season finale Saturday afternoon at Cicerone Field. First pitch is scheduled for 1:00 p.m.
