Softball Defeats UC Riverside Twice in Saturday's Doubleheader

The Titans secure the series win, extend their win streak to 13 games

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2 RIVERSIDE, Calif. – The Cal State Fullerton softball team defeated UC Riverside in both games of the series-opening doubleheader on Saturday at Amy S. Harrison Field to get the series win over the Highlanders. The Titans improved to 33-14 overall and 18-2 in conference play. 

The Titans have won 10 straight conference series against UC Riverside, dating back to April 2015, while extending their win streak to 13 games. 

Cal State Fullerton 2, UC Riverside 0 

Sarah Perez (2-for-4, R, 2 SB) kicked off the offensive front for the Titans in the top of the first inning after slapping a ball up the middle. Perez worked her way around the bases with a stolen base and wild pitch before Nataly Lozano drove her in on a sacrifice fly to left field for a 1-0 lead. 

Ava Arce (0-for-2, 2 BB) led off the sixth inning with a walk before Briona Ferdman entered to pinch run and steal second base. Sarah Coccillos (1-for-3, RBI) recorded her 30th RBI of the season, driving in Ferdman with a single through the left side for a 2-0 lead over the Highlanders. 

Trisha McCleskey (14-7) made her 20th start against the Highlanders, tossing her eighth complete game and fourth shutout win of the season. Through seven frames, McCleskey allowed one hit, one walk and retired four hitters on strikes. She has 90 K on the year and her 3.17 ERA leads the pitching staff. 

Cal State Fullerton 6, UC Riverside 3

Arce (3-for-4, HR, 2 R) kicked off the scoring for the Titans in the first inning, driving in Perez on a base hit for her 52nd RBI of the year. Arce surpassed Missy Taukeiaho (51, 2014) in the record book for the third-most runs batted in by a Titan in a single season. Coccillos remained a force to be reckoned with at the plate, driving in Arce for a 2-0 lead over the Highlanders. 



Arce's 10th home run of the season came in the top of the third inning as a two-run blast to center field. Lozano scored on the play after reaching base on a fielding error by the middle infield. 



The Titans found momentum in the late innings, extending their lead over the Highlanders to 6-1 with a run in the sixth and seventh inning. Colby McClinton drove in Maggie Paulovich (1-for-1,  R, BB) in the sixth, while Abigail Salazar sent a ball up the middle in the seventh to score Ferdman from second base. 



The Highlanders responded in the bottom of the seventh, plating three runs off three hits and a walk, cutting the Titans lead in half (6-3). Leanna Garcia (15-5) tossed her sixth complete game of the season, striking out seven batters with three runs off six hits. 

The Titans return to UC Riverside for the series finale on Sunday, April 27 with first pitch scheduled for 1:00 p.m.
