Softball Clinches Series Sweep Over UC Davis in Walk Off Fashion

Kate Verhoef (3-for-8, 3 R, RBI) drives in Briona Ferdman for the win

FULLERTON, Calif. – The Cal State Fullerton softball team completed their sweep over UC Davis in a seventh inning, 4-3, walk off on Saturday at Anderson Family Field. The Titans have swept their last three consecutive series, extending their win streak to 10 games. They sit atop The Big West standings with a 16-5 conference record (30-14 overall).

Friday night's 12th inning hero, Nataly Lozano, batted in the first run of the game with her 10th double of the season in the bottom of the first inning for a 1-0 lead over the Aggies. The three-time Big West Freshman of the Week batted .364 (4-for-11) over the weekend with two doubles, four RBI and one run scored.

UC Davis found their first lead over the Titans all weekend in the third inning after hitting a go-ahead three-run home run to the scoreboard in left field.

Bats remained quiet for the Titans until the bottom of the sixth inning. Kristalyn Romulo (1-for-3, R), Sarah Perez (2-for-3, 2 R) and Lozano (2-for-3, 2 RBI) strung together three hits to tighten their deficit to 3-2. The Aggies turned to their bullpen, calling upon Caroline Grimes who held the Titans to three earned runs in Friday's 12-inning battle.

Ava Arce's 51st RBI of the season came on a sacrifice fly in the same frame, tying the game at 3-3.  Arce is tied with Missy Taukeiaho for the program's most RBI recorded in a single season. Stephanie Little (1999, 57 RBI) and Jenny Topping (2001, 59 RBI) sit in second and first place.

Sophia Guevara led off the bottom of the seventh with a fly ball that got lost in the sun, making her way to second base before Abigail Salazar bunted Briona Ferdman, who ran for Guevara, over to third base. Kate Verhoef dug in at the plate, slapping a ball over to first base, giving Ferdman enough time to safely slide in the game-winning run.

Leanna Garcia (3.0 IP, 2 H, 0 R, 2 BB, 2 K) and Trisha McCleskey (1.0 IP, 0 H, 0 R, 0 BB, 1 K) held it down from the circle after entering in relief for Eva Hurtado (3.0 IP, 5 H, 3 ER, BB, 2 K). As a staff, the Titans struck out 28 Aggies over across three games, keeping them to six runs off 20 hits.

The Titans take a pause on conference play to host Loyola Marymount (LMU) on Tuesday, April 22 at 6:00 p.m.
