FULLERTON, Calif. – Cal State Fullerton's late inning efforts fell short as the Titans dropped game two to Long Beach State, 8-5, Friday night at Goodwin Field. Fullerton is now 19-19 on the year and 10-7 in Big West play following the loss.Â
The Titans took an early 1-0 lead in the first inning on a sacrifice fly by Andrew Kirchner. Maddox Latta set up Kirchner with a one-out triple to the gap in left center field.Â
Over the next seven innings the game was all Long Beach State. The Dirtbags took a 4-1 lead in the third inning before scoring two in the fourth inning, one in the sixth and one in the eighth to take an 8-1 lead.Â
As the Titans do, they fought hard to get back in the game. Following a pinch-hit double from Jakob Schardt in the eighth, Carter Johnstone singled to bring him around to score and cut the deficit to 8-2.Â
Fullerton put the pressure on Long Beach State in the ninth inning. With runners on second and third and one out, Marcos Rosales hit a sacrifice fly to drive in Eli Lopez and make it an 8-3 game.Â
In his first at-bat of the game, Isaiah Gomez hit an infield single to bring home Contreras and cut the deficit to 8-4. The Titans loaded the bases with two outs on a single from Johnstone and a walk by Latta.Â
The Big West RBI leader, Kirchner, stepped to the plate with the bases loaded and put together a great at-bat to draw a walk and bring in a run (8-5). Kirchner didn't record a hit in the game but drove in two runs to extend his conference-leading RBI total to 52.Â
Trailing 8-5 with the bases loaded, Matthew Bardowell was unable to find a gap in the outfield, flying-out to the right fielder to end the game.Â
Fullerton and Long Beach State meet Saturday afternoon at Goodwin Field for the series-deciding game three. First pitch set for 1:00 p.m.
