Box Score RIVERSIDE, Calif. – The Cal State Fullerton softball team defeated Cal Baptist, 8-4, in their midweek matchup on Tuesday night. The Titans improve to 21-14 on the season and improve to 7-2 on the road.
The Titans wasted no time in getting on the board, plating five runs in the first inning.
Ava Arce (RBI) and
Sarah Coccillos (2 RBI) drove in three runs on a pair of base hits before a double by
Sophia Guevara drove in Coccillos and
Alexia Lopez (single) for a 5-0 lead over the Lancers.
Cal Baptist responded in the bottom half of the inning with an RBI single to bring the score within four runs, 5-1. After four scoreless frames, the Lancers found base runners on back-to-back walks and an RBI base knock in the sixth innings to bring the game within one run, 5-4.
Trisha McCleskey entered in relief of
Leanna Garcia (5.1 IP, 3 H, 4 R, 3 ER, 6 BB, 6 K) with the tying run on third base. After granting the go-ahead run at first base on balls, McCleskey caught Cal Baptist's batter looking to maintain a 5-4 lead heading into the seventh inning.
Maggie Paulovich found insurance for the Titans in the top of the seventh, driving in
KK Christie (hit by pitch) on a double off the left field wall. A sacrifice bunt by
Nataly Lozano extended Fullerton's lead to 7-4, scoring
Colby McClinton who flexed her speed on a bunt back to the pitcher. Paulovich reached home safely on a two-out sacrifice fly by Arce, giving the Titans an 8-4 edge over the Lancers.
The Titans prepare to beat The Beach in Long Beach, starting on Saturday, April 5. The Titans and Long Beach State will open the series with a doubleheader starting at 1:00 p.m. before closing the series on Sunday at 1:00 p.m.
