Titans Drop Series After Splitting Doubleheader against Hawai'i

Ava Arce homers in all three games against the Rainbow Wahine

FULLERTON, Calif. – The Cal State Fullerton softball team split their series-ending doubleheader against Hawai'i in a 5-0 victory and 6-2 loss at Anderson Family Field on Saturday. The Titans stand 20-14 overall and 7-5 in Big West play.

Cal State Fullerton 5, Hawai'i 0

Eva Hurtado silenced the Rainbow Wahine in a complete game shutout, not allowing a run off three hits. Hurtado set career-bests for both innings pitched (7.0 IP) and strikeouts (7 K), while walking three batters.

Nataly Lozano (2-for-3, 2 HR, 2 RBI, 2 R) opened the scoring in the first with a solo home run to left-center field to help the Titans jump out to an early 1-0 lead.

With runners on second and third in the second inning, Kate Verhoef dropped a squeeze bunt to score Sophia Guevara, who reached on a single. Colby McClinton (1-for-2, 2B, RBI) extended Fulllerton's lead to 3-0 with a sacrifice fly that scored Kristalyn Romulo.

Lozano stretched the lead in the third to 4-0 with her second home run of the game. This marked Lozano's first collegiate multi-home run game and sixth of the year.

Ava Arce (2-for-3, HR, RBI) began the fifth inning with a solo shot to center field, powering the Titans to their 5-0 victory. Arce began the first Titan to hit a leadoff (inning) leadoff home run since Hannah Bacera in 2023 against UC Santa Barbara. Arce recorded her team-leading 39th RBI and tied Lozano's six long balls on the season.

The Titans tied the series at 1-1 with their 20th win of the season, becoming the first Big West squad to reach 20 wins.

Hawai'i 6, Cal State Fullerton 2

After three scoreless innings to begin the game, Arce blasted a two-out solo home run to left field to get the Titans on the board, recording a home run in all three games of the series.

Alexia Lopez (1-for-3, 2B, R) doubled down the right field line and scored on the throwing error by the right fielder to give the Titans a 2-0 lead.

The Rainbow Wahine responded in the top of the fifth inning, cutting the lead to 2-1 on a fielding error by Trisha McCleskey. McCleskey then escaped a bases-loaded jam by getting a groundout to end the threat.

A five-run seventh inning for the 'Bows came to an end as Leanna Garcia entered in relief of Eva Hurtado and retired the hitter swinging on strikes.

McCleskey (6.0 IP, 5 H, 3 R, 1 ER, 2 BB, 5 K) started the game for the Titans before Hurtado pitched in relief for two-outs. Hurtado gave up one earned run (three total) off four hits, while walking and striking out a batter each. Garcia (0.1 IP, K) made her first pitching appearance since March 16 against UC Santa Barbara before the Titans went down in order in the bottom of the seventh.
