Baseball Cruises to 8-1 Victory Over CSUB in Series Opener

FULLERTON, Calif. – Cal State Fullerton secured an 8-1 victory over CSU Bakersfield Friday night at Goodwin Field, extending its winning streak to seven games. With the win The Titans improve to 12-13 on the year and 5-5 in Big West Play.

The Titans set the tone early taking a 1-0 lead in the bottom of the first inning on a double hit by Maddox Latta, scoring Carter Johnstone (single) from first. With two outs and Latta at third base, Max Oretga extended the lead to 2-0 on a single to left field.
 


 

Cal State Bakersfield responded in the top of the second inning with a run to cut the Titans lead to 2-1. 

The Titans immediately answered in the home half of the second with three runs, extending their lead to 5-1. With runners on the corners and one out, Latta hit a two-run double to right center driving in Marco Rosales and Johnstone.
 



Matthew Bardowell capped off the three-run inning with a single that scored Latta for a 5-1 lead. 

Fullerton took advantage of a Roadrunner fielding error in the bottom of the fourth with two outs, allowing Latta to score from second. Latta went 2-for-4 with three runs, three RBI, and a walk. The senior leads the team with a .398 batting average which ranks tied for first in the conference.

Starting pitcher Mikiah Negrete gave the Titans five solid innings on the mound, allowing just one run on six hits. Negrete earned the win to improve to 3-1 on the year.

Ryan Faulks took over in relief with the bases loaded and no outs in the sixth and secured three crucial outs to preserve the Titans five-run lead. Faulks would go on to pitch two shutout innings in relief while allowing just one hit.

The Titans added to their lead in the sixth inning on an RBI single from Ortega to score Andrew Kirchner. Ortega went 2-for-4 with two RBI Friday night.

With Bardowell at third base, Eli Lopez hit a sacrifice fly to center to extend the Titans lead to 8-1.

Cam Burdick made several key plays in centerfield throughout the game, including a run-saving diving catch in the eighth to end the top half of the inning. 
 

Grady Faris closed out the ninth inning by striking out the side to secure the win in the series opener.

The Titan look to carry their momentum into game two Saturday evening at Goodwin Field. First pitch is set for 5:00 p.m.
