SAN LUIS OBISPO, Calif. – The Cal State Fullerton softball team completed the series sweep over Cal Poly in a five-inning 12-0 run-rule on Sunday. The Titans shutout the Mustangs in all three games, two being in run-rule fashion. Fullerton improved to 19-12 overall and 6-3 in conference play.Â
Sophia Guevara opened the explosive third inning with a single into right field, before
Briona Ferdman entered to pinch run and stole second base.
Kate Verhoef (2-for-3, R) advanced Ferdman to third on an infield single to shortstop, while a throwing error scored Ferdman for a 1-0 lead.Â
Three consecutive singles by
Sarah Perez and
Nataly Lozano (RBI) extended Fullerton's lead to 2-0, as
Kristalyn Romulo (error) rounded third and crossed the bag safely at home.Â
Ava Arce (2-for-3, R, 4 RBI) continued the rally in the top of the third with a two-run single to left center. Arce leads the team and conference with 36 RBI on the season.
Alexia Lopez followed in suit, driving in Arce for a 5-0 lead with one out on the board.
The Titans found their sixth run of the inning on a
Sarah Coccillos single up the middle, as Ferdman and Verhoef loaded the bases with back-to-back singles to reach 10 hits as a team.Â
Jenna Stevens smashed a three-run triple over the center fielder's head in right-center field for a 9-0 lead with two outs on the board. Romulo, who re-entered to run, stole home to make it 10-0 before the end of the top of the third.Â
Arce added two more runs onto the board in the fifth inning with a base hit, extending Fullerton's lead to 12-0. Â
The Mustangs found slight momentum in the bottom of the fifth inning, loading the bases on three base knocks up the middle. McCleskey, backed by Ferdman in left field, made the last out of the game to secure their second series sweep of the season.Â
Trisha McCleskey picked up her second win of the series, silencing the Mustangs through five innings. McCleskey struck out four batters, while allowing no runs off five hits and one walk.Â
Big West play returns to Anderson Family Field on Friday, March 28, as the Titans host the Rainbow Wahine of Hawaii in a three game series. The first pitch for Friday's evening meeting is slated for 6:00 p.m.Â
