Softball Defeats Cal Poly in Two Shutout Victories to Open Series

Ava Arce leads Titans to doubleheader sweep with HR, 2B, 3 RBI

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2 SAN LUIS OBISPO, Calif. – The Cal State Fullerton softball team swept their series-opening doubleheader at Cal Poly with two shutout wins. The Titans defeated the Mustangs 2-0 before securing their second win of the day in a 9-0 run-rule victory. 

Through two games, the Titans combined for 11 runs on 15 hits. Trisha McCleskey and Eva Hurtado both recorded two shutout victories from the circle, keeping the Cal Poly offense to eight hits, while collecting six strikeouts. 

Cal State Fullerton 2, Cal Poly 0

The Titans opened the scoring in the top of the third inning, capitalizing on a base hit to right center by Nataly Lozano. Lozano (3-for-4, RBI, 2 SB) collected her 20th RBI of the season, scoring Kate Verhoef (2-for-3, R). Verhoef led off the inning with the first Titan hit of the game, while snapping a 13-game hitless streak. 

Alexia Lopez extended the lead to 2-0 in the fifth inning on a sacrifice fly to Cal Poly's center fielder, driving in Sarah Perez. Lopez matched her jersey number, driving in her 22nd runner of the season on her third sacrifice hit. 

Trisha McCleskey (7-5, 3.98 ERA) tossed her fifth complete game of her career, holding the Mustangs to no runs and five hits. McCleskey retired three batters on strikes for a total of 34 strikeouts on the season. 

Cal State Fullerton 9, Cal Poly 0 (5 innings)

Perez (2-for-4, 2R, 3B) kicked off the second game with a triple to right center, collecting the second triple of her career and the first extra base hit of the day for either dugout. Perez scored three pitches later on a sacrifice fly to right field by Lozano for an early 1-0 lead over the Mustangs. 

The Titans extended their lead to 2-0 in the second inning on a sacrifice fly by Sophia Guevara that scored Colby McClinton (double) from third base. 

Ava Arce (3-for-3, 2 R, 3 RBI, HR, 2B) crushed her fourth home run of the year over the right field wall, collecting two RBI for a 4-0 lead over the Mustangs in the third inning. 

The Titans plated a run in the fourth inning off a Jenna Stevens single through the left side before plating four runs in the fifth inning to take a 9-0 lead over the Mustangs. Ava Arce (double), Coccillos (single), Romulo (walk) and a fielding error put the Titans in run-rule territory. 

Hurtado saw all five innings for the Titans, keeping Cal Poly's bats to three hits. Hurtado improved to 2-2 on the season with her second complete game shutout of the year. 

The Titans and Mustangs return to Bob Janssen Field for their series finale on Sunday, March 23 at 12:00 p.m.
