FULLERTON, Calif. ā After falling into an early 4-0 deficit, the Titans came storming back with a six-run seventh inning to defeat USC 11-6 Tuesday night at Goodwin Field. Fullerton improves to 5-11 on the year with the win.Ā
The Titans first inning struggles on the mound continued Tuesday night as USC jumped out to an early 4-0 lead in the top of the first inning.Ā
However, Fullerton quickly answered with three runs in the bottom half of the inning on a three-run home run by Matthew Bardowell. With runners on first and second, Bardowell laced a ball 111 mph off the bat over the left field wall to bring the Titans within one run, 4-3.Ā
USC countered with one run in the top half of the second inning to extend its lead to 5-3.Ā
Fullerton pulled within one run again in the fourth inning after scoring one run on an Andrew Kirchner RBI double to right center field. With two outs, Eli Lopez and Carter Johnstone were hit by pitches to put a runner in scoring position for Kirchner. The first-year transfer now has 25 RBI on the year to lead the conference and rank tied for 21st in the country.Ā
After leaving the game-tying run in scoring position in the fifth and sixth inning, the Titans capitalized in the seventh inning with six runs to take a 10-5 lead.Ā
Trailing 5-4 entering the seventh, Maddox Latta got the inning started with a leadoff single. Following an infield out to move him to second base, Latta stole third with one out. Niko Lombardi drew a walk to put runners on the corners before Cam Burdick came through with a single to center field to bring home Latta and tie the game at 5-5.Ā
Latta had a perfect game at the plate, going 4-for-4 with a run while drawing a walk and two stolen bases. The senior now leads the team with a .373 batting average which ranks ninth in The Big West.Ā
With runners on first and second, Lopez hit a single to right center field to score Jack Burke (pinch runner) to give the Titans their first lead of the game, 6-5. Lopez went 2-for-4 on the night with two runs and two RBI.Ā
Following a defensive error by USC that allowed Lopez to reach second base, Johnstone hit a two-run single up the middle to extend the Titans lead to 8-5. The freshman had one of his best games at the plate, going 3-for-4 with two runs and two RBI.Ā
Paul Contrereas continued the inning with a single to left field to bring home Kirchner and Johnstone while putting the Titans up 10-5. In just three games since returning to action, Contreras is hitting .286 with two runs and six RBI.Ā
The Trojans scored one run in the top of the eighth inning to cut the Titans lead to 10-6. However, Fullerton got the run right back in the bottom of the inning on an infield hit by Lopez to score Max Ortega from third base.Ā
Andrew Wright closed out the game in the ninth inning for the Titans to secure the win, allowing just one hit while striking out two. Bardowell finished the game off with an unbelievable diving catch in left field for the final out.Ā
Gavin Meyer earned the win for Fullerton to improve to 1-0 on the year. Meyer entered the game in the top of the seventh with the bases loaded and a 2-2 count and froze the batter to strike him out on one pitch to end the threat.Ā
After three straight weekends on the road, the Titans are at Goodwin Field this weekend for their conference home opener against UC San Diego. The three-game series begins Friday night at 6:30 p.m.
