Game Recap: Baseball |

Baseball Drops Both Games of Doubleheader to Stanford on Opening Day

FULLERTON, Calif. – Cal State Fullerton baseball dropped both games of Saturday's doubleheader to Stanford on opening day, losing game one 13-1 and game two by a final score of 6-3. Fullerton opens the season 0-2 on the year.

Game One, 13-1

The Titans didn't get the start they were looking for in game one as Stanford jumped out to an early 3-0 lead in the top of the first inning. Stanford all but sealed the game in the second inning of the 2025 season opener after scoring five runs to extend its lead to 8-0.

After primarily serving as a middle relief pitcher for the Titans over the past two seasons, Jason Blood got the first start of the season and gave up eight earned runs on seven hits in one-plus inning of work.

Maddox Latta got the Titans first hit of the game and season on a leadoff single up the middle of the infield in the bottom of the fourth inning.

Derek Turner had a strong outing in relief for Fullerton, giving up just one earned run on seven hits while walking one batter and striking out four in four innings pitched. Turner entered the game in the second inning with the bases loaded.

Jakob Schardt got the Titans on the board in the sixth inning on a single to right field to drive in Latta from second base.

Game Two, 6-3

Much like game one, Fullerton had an inauspicious start in game two as Stanford scored four runs in the top of the first inning to take an early lead. The Titans were plagued by two errors in the first inning which led to all four runs.

Mikiah Negrete had a good showing for the Titans but the aforementioned errors led to him getting a loss on his record. Negrete gave up five runs, all of which were unearned, on three hits in six innings on the mound. After allowing runs in the first inning, Negrete responded with three consecutive 1-2-3 innings.

Stanford went on to score one run in the sixth and one in the seventh to take a 6-0 lead.

The Titans battled back with one run in the final three innings but were unable to put up a crooked number to tie or take the lead.

Andrew Kirchner got the scoring started in the seventh inning, recording his first hit and RBI as a Titan with a single through the right side of the infield to score Schardt from second base.

In the eighth inning it was Schardt's turn to drive in a run, once again bringing home Latta from second base to cut the deficit to 6-2. The Titans missed their opportunity to score multiple runs and put the pressure on Stanford in the eighth after leaving runners stranded on second and third base.

Fullerton added one more run in the bottom of the ninth a productive out by Kirchner to bring home Carter Johnstone and make it a 6-3 game.

Schardt had the Titans best day at the plate, going 1-for-2 with a walk and an RBI in game one followed by 2-for-4 with a run and an RBI in game two.

The Titans look to bounce back in game three of the series against Stanford Sunday at Goodwin Field. First pitch for Sunday's game is set for 1:00 p.m.
