LA JOLLA, Calif. - In day two of the Triton Invitational, the Cal State Fullerton Titans women's water polo split their day in the consolation bracket. The Titans tried to comeback against No. 15 UC Santa Barbara but fell 9-8 in their first game of the morning. In the Titans second game of the day against Claremont-Mudd Scripps, the Titans rallied for a fourth quarter comeback to defeat the Athenas 9-8.Â
The Titans will take on San Diego State in the thirteenth place game on Sunday. Â
Freshman
Emme Doube-MacLeod continued her strong weekend debut after scoring two goals against Hawaii yesterday, four goals against UC Santa Barbara, and 2 goals against Claremont Mudd-Scripps.
CAL STATE FULLERTON 8, No. 15 UC SANTA BARBARA 9
The Titans started behind early after the Gauchos jumped to a 3-0 lead. Â
Emme Doube-MacLeod was able to get one goal back to make it 3-1 after the first period.
After an early UCSB goal to start the second, the Titans scored three straight goals to tie the game at 4-4. Â Doube-Macleod found the back of the net twice and
Neida Torres also scored.
UCSB found two goals before the half ended and led 6-4 after two periods. Both sides traded one goal a piece in the third period as
Ileina Hatori found the back of the net for the Titans. Â The Titans trailed 7-5 after the third period.
Doube-Macleod led the fourth quarter with her fourth goal of the game to cut it to a 7-6 lead, however the Gauchos scored two goals to take a 9-6 lead with 2:38 remaining.
Destiny Hernandez scored on a penalty shot with 1:36 left to make it a 9-7 game. Â The Titans got a late consolation goal from
Jade Lonzo with 10 seconds left to make it a 9-8 game.Â
Annabelle Sherman made 11 saves in the cage for the Titans against the Gauchos.
CAL STATE FULLERTON 9, CLAREMONT-MUDD SCRIPPS 8
The Titans trailed early for the second game of the day in the battle of Greek Mythological Mascots.Â
Emme Doube-MacLeod started the scoring for the Titans on their first possession of the game. Â The Athenas then found the back three straight times before
Mikka Von Scherr got a goal for the Titans. Â The Athenas led 3-2 after the first quarter.
The Athenas outscored the Titans 2-to-1 in the second quarter. Â
Elise Bliss scored her first goal of the game in the second quarter as the Athenas led 5-3 at halftime.
In the third quarter, the Titans outscored the Athenas 3-to-2. Â
Neida Torres found the back of the net first for the Titans to make it a 5-4 game.
Mia Solorzano and
Elise Bliss dented the twine in the third as the Athenas led 7-6 after the third period.
In the fourth quarter,
Destiny Hernandez got a tying goal with 7:05 left to make it a 7-7 game.  CMS scored their final goal of the game with 3:21 to take an 8-7 lead over the Titans.  Eliss Bliss completed her hat trick to tie the game at 8-8 and Emme Doube-Macleod scored her final goal of the day and eighth of the weekend on a powerplay with 1:35 left to give the Titans a 9-8 lead. Â
The Titans will take on the Aztecs on Sunday morning at 10:20 AM at Canyonview Pool in the 13th place game.  The Aztecs lost to Long Beach State 20-11, California Baptist 14-11, and defeated Concordia 16-5.  Â
