IRVINE, Calif. - It was announced by the conference on Monday that
Cristina Jones was named the Big West Conference Women's Basketball player of the week.
The sophomore forward scored a career high 25 points for the Titans in their record setting 110-22 win over La Sierra on Sunday. Jones shot a very efficient 85% (11-for-13) from the floor along with a perfect 3-for-3 from the free throw line. She also added 8 rebounds, 5 steals, and 3 assists all in just 16 minutes of work.
The Titans set a new career high in scoring with 110 points, the previous program record was a 108-80 win set on March 7th, 1991 against New Mexico State.This was the 23rd time in program history that the Titans held an opponent to less than 30 points and the first time since the 1974-75 season. The 22 points allowed by the defense was the seventh lowest mark in program history and the last time the Titans allowed an opponent to score less than 22 points was an 86-21 win over UC Riverside on February 12th, 1975. The 28 steals were a program record, breaking the previous record of 25 steals against CSUN set on November 23rd, 1990.
Jones is currently leading the Titans in scoring at 14.4 points per game and is ninth in the conference in scoring. She also leads the conference with 38 steals and is averaging 3.8 steals per game.
This is the first weekly award for the Titans women's basketball program since Gabi Vidmar won the award on December 18th, 2023.
The Titans return to conference play this week on the road against the two top teams in the conference. UCSB (10-1/2-0) on Thursday and UC Irvine (11-2/2-0) on Saturday.
