SAN LUIS OBISPO, Calif. – Cal State Fullerton defeated Cal Poly on the road Wednesday night by a final score of 2-0 at Spanos Stadium. With the win the Titans improve to 5-4-4 on the year and 2-1-0 in Big West play.
Fullerton got on the board early in the first half as Jose de la Torre gave the team a 1-0 lead in the 20th minute after dribbling between multiple Cal Poly defenders. De la Torre now has a tied for team-high nine points on three goals and three assists.
The Titans dominated possession while pushing the ball in the final third for much of the first half. Fullerton recorded nine shots in the first 45 minutes compared to Cal Poly's three shots.
The two sides played a back-and-forth second half with Cal Poly looking to find an equalizer.
Following a Cal Poly free-kick in Fullerton's defensive end, the Titans quickly countered and found Mario Carlos streaking down the left side. Carlos beat the Mustangs goalkeeper with his right foot to give Fullerton a 2-0 lead. Nick Relerford played Carlos on a perfect through ball to set up the goal.
The Titans played stifling defense down the stretch with Emanuel Padilla making multiple incredible saves in net to keep the shutout intact. Padilla finished the game with five saves to give the Titans their first shutout since Sept. 14 against Grand Canyon.
Fullerton returns home to Titan Stadium Saturday night for a Big West showdown against UC Irvine. Kickoff is scheduled for 7:00 p.m.
