FULLERTON, Calif. – Cal State Fullerton women's volleyball battled through tight second and third sets but dropped a 3-0 decision (16-25, 23-25, 21-25) to Long Beach State on Friday night at Titan Gym. The Titans move to 7-16 overall and 2-9 in Big West play.Â
Marisa Nakata set a new career-high with 11 kills against Long Beach State, just one dig shy of having a double-double night.
Ketesia Hall earned her 50th block of the season after combining at the net with
Zariah Crosby to deny an attack in the opening set.Â
Emilia Graham got the Titans on the board with a kill after surrendering the first four points of the match to Long Beach State. Crosby followed with a kill through the middle to cut the deficit to 5-2. Crosby then teamed up with Hall for a block to continue chipping away at Long Beach's lead (5-3) before the Beach went on a 4-0 run to extend its advantage to 9-3.
Hannah Hass brought the set within four points (14-10) with a powerful kill through the middle, later denying a set point with a solo block. Long Beach State took the set a point later, 25-16, on a Titan attack error.
Hall tied the second set at 3-3 with a kill before finding the back line to give Fullerton a 4-3 advantage. An ace from
Mia Feldhaus and a kill from Hass evened the score at 8-8, and back-to-back blocks by
Sarah Schubert and Hass gave the Titans a 10-9 lead. Hass,
Kahea Carvalho, and
Marisa Nakata each put away kills to extend Fullerton's lead to 13-10, forcing Long Beach to call a timeout.
The teams traded points through six ties before Long Beach State strung together consecutive points to close out a 25-23 win and take a 2-0 match lead.
The Titans battled from behind in the third set, led by Nakata's three kills. The Beach built a 15-10 lead as Fullerton hit .122 in the frame. Schubert tapped in a kill before delivering another from the left side to cut the deficit to 18-13. Long Beach pushed ahead 20-13 before the Titans responded out of a timeout with kills from Hass and
Fina Tuinauvai.
Nakata put away her 10th and 11th kills of the match, while aces from Hass and Tillman trimmed the Beach's lead to 23-21. However, Long Beach State held on for a 25-21 win to complete the sweep.
The Titans return to Titan Gym on Saturday, Nov. 1, for an evening matchup against UC San Diego. First serve is scheduled for 6 p.m.
