Titans Sweep Roadrunners to Snap Four-Match Skid

Lira Pukl Verdel, Marisa Nakata and Devin Hicks power Titans past Cal State Bakersfield in straight sets

FULLERTON, Calif. – Cal State Fullerton women's volleyball snapped a four-match skid with a straight-set victory over Cal State Bakersfield (25-21, 25-22, 25-20) at Titan Gym on Saturday. The Titans improved to 7-11 overall and 2-4 in Big West play, marking their highest conference win total since the 2022 season.

Ketesia Hall (4 kills) sparked a dominant offensive run by the Titans, opening the match with a kill. Lira Pukl Verdel (9 kills, 2 aces) and Marisa Nakata (5 kills, 2 solo blocks) added to the momentum, helping Fullerton build to a 10-4 lead.

The Roadrunners capitalized on three Titan attack errors to tighten their deficit to 16-15, before Fullerton answered with kills from Nakata, Hannah Hass, and Pukl Verdel to regain control. Carissa Wiles (6 kills, 2 blocks) pushed the Titans to set point with a backline kill, and a service ace from Devin Hicks (5 aces) sealed the 25-21 win.

Fullerton carried the momentum into the second set, overcoming an early 2-1 deficit with a 5-0 run behind two aces from Hicks and a block assist by Zariah Crosby and Wiles. Nakata, a 5-foot-6 defensive specialist turned outside hitter, recorded her first career solo block to extend the lead to 11-6. Pukl Verdel and Wiles later followed with back-to-back kills down the line to close out the set, 25-22, giving the Titans a 2-0 match lead.

Hall's eighth kill of the night tied the third set at 7-7 before she teamed up with Hass for a block that gave Fullerton an 8-7 advantage. The Titans maintained control, taking an 11-8 lead and later extending it to 14-10 with a powerful middle kill from Crosby. Crosby and Hall combined for another block to make it 22-19, and Hicks capped the match with her sixth ace of the night to secure the 25-20 win and a 3-0 sweep.

After a brief homestand, the Titans hit the road to face UC Santa Barbara on Friday at 7 p.m., followed by a Saturday matchup at Cal Poly at 2 p.m.
