Titans Drop Tightly Contested Game to CSU Bakersfield

FULLERTON, Calif. – Cal State Fullerton men's basketball lost a tightly contested matchup against CSU Bakersfield by a final score of 71-68 Thursday night at Titan Gym. With the loss the Titans drop to 6-15 and 1-8 in Big West play.

Fullerton got off to a strong start, opening the game on a 10-2 run over the first six minutes of action.

Bakersfield quickly responded with a 12-0 run of its own to take a 14-10 lead. The Titans went scoreless and 0-for-9 from the field during Bakersfield's run which lasted 7:13.

The Titans went into the locker room trailing 31-26 at halftime. Zion Richardson led the Titans with 10 points in the first half on 3-of-5 shooting.

Fullerton got its offense started right away in the second half as Antwan Robinson drilled a corner three to make it a 31-29 game.

The two teams exchanged punches throughout the half with Bakersfield holding onto a narrow lead before a three-point basket from LoLo Rudolph tied the game at 42 with 14:21 remaining in the game.

The game went back and forth over the next few minutes as the Roadrunners responded to Rudolph's three with a three-point play on an and-one to retake the lead. The Titans answered with another three-pointer from Robinson to tie the game once again before another three-point play from Bakersfield gave them the lead right back (48-45).

The momentum could have easily swayed Bakersfield's way after its defense blocked a fastbreak layup attempt by the Titans which led to a slam dunk on the other end and extended the Roadrunners lead to 50-45.

However, Fullerton responded with back-to-back stops on the defensive end while being aggressive and getting to the free-throw line on the offensive end to cut the deficit to 50-49.

After Bakersfield was able to build a lead again, Fullerton's defense forced three straight turnovers and four straight empty possessions without a shot.

The Titans used their defensive intensity to tie the game at 57-57 thanks to two made free throws from Donovan Oday with 6:11 left in the game.

The Titans were never able to take the lead late in the game and ended up trailing Bakersfield for the remainder of the game.

Oday led the Titans with 20 points on 5-of-11 shooting and 10-of-14 from the free-throw line while scoring 16 of his points in the second half. Oday has scored in double-figures in five straight games and has scored 20 plus points in three of those five.

Richardson and Robinson added double-figures scoring for the Titans with 15 and 14 points, respectively.

The Titans look to bounce back Saturday as they host UC Santa Barbara at Titan Gym. Tip-off is scheduled for 6:00 p.m.
