Titans Late Surge Not Enough at Hawaii

HONOLULU, HI. - The Cal State Fullerton Titans women's basketball team lost 54-44 against the University of Hawai'i on Saturday evening at the SimpliFi Arena at Stan Sheriff Center.

It was a defensive battle from both sides in the first half as the Titans held Hawai'i to just 22 points in the first half and the Rainbow Wahine defense held the Titans to a season low 13 points in the first half.  

After trailing 36-to-19 after three quarters.  The Titans had their best offensive output of the season in a single quarter (against a Division 1 team) as they scored 25 points in the fourth quarter.  After a tough shooting night all game, the Titans shot 53.8 % from the floor and made all four of their three-point baskets in the fourth.   They almost held Hawai'i without a field goal for the final 7:34 minutes of the game as Hawai'i scored 12 of their 18 points from the free throw line with half of those coming from late fouls during the final minute.   

Aaliyah Stanton led all scorers with 18 points for the game.  She made three 3 pointers for the first time all season.  Eva Levingston had 9 points and 5 boards for the shorthanded Titans in the post. Hawai'i outshot the Titans 35% (17-48) to 33% (15-46) for the game.  The Titans went 5-16 from beyond the arc and held the Rainbow Wahine to 16% (3-for-19) beyond the arc.  Hawai'i outrebounded the Titans 43-to-21 for the game.

The first quarter was an offensive struggle from both sides as the Titans scored the first 4 points of the game and held Hawai'i scoreless for over the first five minutes of the game.  The Titans led 6-4 after the first quarter as they held Hawai'i to a season low 4-points in a quarter and made the Rainbow Wahine commit 9 turnovers in the period.



The Rainbow Wahine outscored the Titans 18-to-7 in the second quarter as they went on an 8-0 run to start the quarter and the Titans didn't get their first point of the second quarter until Levingston made a basket with 4:52 left in the quarter.  The Rainbow Wahine led 22-to-13 at the half.  

The Titans struggled out of the gates in the third quarter as the Rainbow Wahine went on a 10-2 run to start the quarter.  The Titans had their third single digit quarter of the game in the third quarter as Hawai'i outscored them 14-to-6.  



Hawai'i scored the first four points of the fourth quarter to take a 21-point lead before a switch turned on for the Titans during the final seven minutes of the game.  Aaliyah Stanton led the way by scoring 13 of her 18 points in the quarter.   

Madelynn Muniz knocked down back-to-back three pointers and Aaliyah Stanton also made two three's in the fourth as well.  



The Titans were able to cut the lead back to 10 points with :46 left at 47-37.  However, they were forced to commit fouls on Hawai'i to get the ball back and the Rainbow Wahine made 5-of-6 free throws down the stretch and were able to prevent the Titans from further chipping away at the lead.

The Titans head back home next for two games against UC Irvine on Thursday and Long Beach State on Saturday.
