Titans Shutout against UConn

STORRS, CT. - The Cal State Fullerton Titans women's soccer team were defeated by UCONN 2-0 on Thursday night at Morrone Stadium.

The Titans fell to 2-4 for the season overall and have been held scoreless over their last four games after scoring eight goals in the first two games of the season.

The Titans were playing in the East Coast for the first time since 2016 and the first ever time in the Northeast part of the country and against the Huskies.

After an early corner kick for the Titans in the 2nd minute of the game, the Huskies had a counterattack on the ensuing play and Maddie Fried hit a shot into the left side of the goal past Ranson to take a 1-0 lead over the Titans.

The Titans settled into the game and had a couple set piece opportunities but couldn't break the Husky defense in the first half.  With time ticking off in the first half, UCONN added a second goal 15 seconds before the halftime whistle.  Taya Townsell stopped a cross inside the box but the ball remained in the air and a UConn player passed it to an open Taylor Jenkins in the middle of the box who slotted it into the goal to give UCONN a 2-0 lead at the halftime break.

In the second half, the Titans played one of their best halves in recent games but without a goal to show for it.  After being outshot 7-to-2 in the first half, the Titans flipped the script and outshot UCONN 7-to-2 in the second half.  The Titans also had 8 corner kicks to the Huskies 1, but weren't able to capitalize on them. Isabella Cruz and Makenna McGill both had tough shots on goal that forced the 2023 Big East Goalkeeper of the Year, Kaitlyn Mahoney to come up with big saves for the home side.  Cruz was also wrestled down inside the box on a dangerous play by a UCONN defender that somehow resulted in nothing.

After a flurry of action for the first 30 minutes of the second half, neither side was able to do much in the final 15 minutes as UCONN saw out the shutout against the Titans.

The Titans will head to Newton, Massachusetts on Sunday for a match against Boston College, their fourth ACC opponent of the season.  The Titans and Boston College played to a nil-nil draw in last year's season opener at Titan Stadium.  The Eagles are 6-1 to start the season and coming off a 3-2 victory at Cornell on Thursday. Kick-off is set for 10:00 AM PST at the Newton Campus Lacrosse and Soccer Field.

NOTES: The Titans scoreless streak of 367:54 is the second worst mark in the program history. The record is 396:34 which was set from August 26th, 2011 to September 11th, 2011.
