Titans Fall Just Short to No. 4 Pepperdine, No. 20 CBU

LOS ANGELES, Calif. — Cal State Fullerton men's water polo came up just short to No. 4 Pepperdine, 13-11, and No. 20 California Baptist, 15-7, Saturday on the final day of the Big West/WCC Showdown.

Titans 7, No. 20 CBU 15

The Lancers jumped out to a 4-0 lead before Jacob Hatch scored to put Fullerton on the board. Francisco Paredes added another score for the Titans but CBU used another 4-0 scoring run to go up 8-2 at the half. 

Nico D'Angelo set up Togan Ozbek for a goal before scoring one of his own to bring the Titans within four, 8-4. Ozbek, Bende Aubeli and Dominic Hernandez each scored once more but the Lancers came away with the 15-7 win. 

Titans 11, No. 4 Pepperdine 13

After falling behind 5-1 early, Fullerton answered with goals from Julian Nichols, D'Angelo and Alec Isaacman to come back within a point, 5-4. Aubeli and D'Angelo each added scores to tie the game at 6-6, as the Titans went into halftime down one, 7-6. 

Nichols scored again at the start of the third before two more goals from Isaacman and Nichols tied the match at 9-9 near the end of the third. The Waves scored two unanswered to take an 11-9 advantage into the final period. 

D'Angelo scored unassisted at the start of the fourth, bringing Fullerton within one, 11-10. But Pepperdine tallied two more goals to go up 13-10 with 4:49 left. Nichols added his fourth goal of the game near the end of the match but it wasn't quite enough, as the Waves came away with the 13-11 win. 

The Titans return to action on Wednesday, Sept. 25, when they take on Claremont-Mudd-Scripps on the road at 7:00 p.m. PT.
