Game Recap: Men's Water Polo |

Fullerton Defeats Cal Lutheran, Concordia at Titan Invitational

FULLERTON, Calif. — Cal State Fullerton men's water polo defeated Cal Lutheran, 11-10, and Concordia, 14-9, Saturday on the second and final day of the Titan Invitational. The results improve the Titans' record to 4-4 on the season. 

Titans 11, Cal Lutheran 10

Teams traded goals to start the match, with Alec Isaacman, Ethan Cooney, Togan Ozbek and Bende Aubeli each scoring to tie the game at 4-4. Cal Lutheran went on to take a 7-5 advantage, before another Ozbek score brought the Titans within a goal, 7-6, at halftime. 

Shelby Johnson and Zack Ewing got on the board for Fullerton, tying the match at 8-8 heading into the fourth. The Kingsmen scored the first goal of the final period to go up 9-8, but the Titans answered with scores from Dominic Hernandez and Julian Nichols to take a 10-9 lead. Cal Lutheran then scored with 2:56 left to tie the game back up at 10-10. 

With the game still tied with under a minute remaining and coming out of a timeout, Aubeli drew a penalty foul near the cage. Ozbek fired the penalty attempt past the Kingsmen goalkeeper, giving the Titans the go ahead goal and an 11-10 lead. Cal Lutheran's final shot of the match went wide, as Fullerton held on for the win. 

Titans 14, Concordia 9

Fullerton jumped out to a quick 3-0 lead behind a pair of goals from Tony Benedetti and one from Ozbek. The Titans maintained a comfortable lead throughout the first half, using a 4-0 scoring run to go up 8-2. The Golden Eagles got two back before the half to bring the score to 8-4 for Fullerton. 

Ewing, Nico D'Angelo, Hernandez and Nichols each scored in the third as the Titans took a 13-8 advantage into the final period. Each team scored just once in the fourth, as an Isaacman goal gave Fullerton the 14-9 lead and win. 

The Titans return to action next weekend at the Big West/WCC Challenge in Los Angeles. Fullerton will face UC Santa Barbara on Sept. 20 before taking on California Baptist and Pepperdine on Sept. 21.
