STANFORD, Calif. - Cal State Fullerton softball opened the 2024 NCAA Stanford Regional with a 1-0 loss to the No. 20 Mississippi State Bulldogs on Friday at the Boyd & Jill Smith Family Stadium.
This marked the second loss to the Bulldogs this season, as the two squads first met on Feb. 24 at the Mary Nutter Collegiate Classic. The Titans hold a 4-2 against the Bulldogs under the coaching of
Kelly Ford and
Jorge Araujo.
Haley Rainey silenced the Bulldogs in the early innings, giving up her first hit in the fourth on a leadoff single to center field. A two-out double to right field got by a reaching
Kate Verhoef for a 1-0 lead over the Titans.
Before this lead, Rainey was backed by a solid defense.
Bailey Wallace made a diving grab in foul territory to start the bottom of the first. In the second, the Titans caught the Bulldogs in a rundown and turned it into a double play.
The Titans left eight runners on base with six hits as a team, highlighted by a double to left-center by Wallace in the top of the third.
After this loss, the Titans will play the No. 8 Stanford vs. Saint Mary's loser on Saturday, May 18 at 4:30 p.m. PT. If they win, they will play another game immediately following at 7:00 p.m. PT/.
