Titans Win 2024 Big West Title in Series Win Over LBSU

Leanna Garcia (8.2 IP, 5 H, 2 R, 1 ER, 3 BB, 9 K) powers Titans to victory

FULLERTON, Calif. - Cal State Fullerton Softball capped off Senior Night with a 10-4 series win as the 2024 Big West Champions after falling to Long Beach State, 4-3, in the first game of Saturday's doubleheader. Fullerton finished the season with a 36-17 overall record and 22-5 in conference play. The Titans went 11-1 at home against conference opponents, winning all nine series with four sweeps.

Long Beach State 4, Cal State Fullerton 3

Staci Chambers started in the circle for the Titans and faced trouble early as Long Beach would get two runners on with only one out in the first inning. With some help from her defense, Chambers escaped the jam with two groundouts to second base.

The Titans responded in the bottom of the inning with two base hits from Kika Ramirez and Hannah Becerra. Ava Arce (1-for-2, 2B,  2 RBI) drove in both runners with a double to left-center field, her fourth of the year.

Haley Rainey took over for Chambers (4.1 IP, 1 ER, 1 SO) in the top of the fifth inning. The Beach scored four runs on three hits to take the lead over the Titans, 4-2, before Leanna Garcia (2.1 IP, 0 ER, 1 SO) replaced Rainy and forced a groundout to end the inning.

Megan Delgadillo started the bottom half of the inning with a single, followed by walks from Ramirez and Becerra. This set up a fielder's choice groundout from Candace Yingling to score Delgadillo and take back a run.

With an opportunity to clinch the conference title in walk-off fashion at the bottom of the seventh, the Titans went down in order, splitting the series with The Beach and leaving game three to be the Championship decider.

Cal State Fullerton 10, Long Beach State 4

Long Beach jumped out to an early lead, scoring two runs in the top of the first. The Titans responded in the bottom of the inning as Peyton Toto drove home Bailey Wallace (double) and Becerra (walk) on a triple, her second of the season.

Leanna Garcia, who replaced Staci Chambers in the first inning, found herself in a jam the next inning with runners on first and second and no outs. After two fielder's choice groundouts and a walk, Garcia forced a groundout to shortstop to end the inning.

Long Beach retook the lead in the third inning, but Ramirez (2-for-3, RBI) lit a fire for the Titans with a single that scored Delgadillo, who started the inning with her 10th double of the season.

Colby McClinton put the Titans back on top, 5-3, with a two-run single and defensive throwing decision. Jessi Alcala and Yingling joined the rally, with Alcala driving in McClinton and Yingling scoring Alcala.

A pair of errors by Long Beach would score Sarah Perez to extend the Fullerton lead even further to 8-3 heading into the fourth inning.

In the fourth inning, McClinton (2-for-3, 1 R) earned her third RBI of the game with a base hit.

The Titans again scored off a Long Beach error after Sarah Perez reached home for the second time in the game. Fullerton allowed one more run in the sixth running before defeating Long Beach 10-4.

Leanna Garcia (6.1 IP, 1 ER, 8 SO) set a new career high for innings pitched, earning her first win of the season after striking out the side in the top of the seventh.

The Titans are set to make back-to-back appearances at NCAA Regionals. The team will have a no-host Selection Show Watch Party at Roscoe's in Downtown Fullerton starting at 4:00 pm.
