FULLERTON, Calif. – Cal State Fullerton baseball dropped its series opener to UC Davis by a final score of 7-4 Friday night at Goodwin Field. With the loss the Titans drop to 14-32 on the year and 5-17 in Big West play.Â
UC Davis jumped out to an early lead, scoring two runs in the top of the first inning a two-run home run by Damian Stone.Â
Fullerton missed a golden opportunity to get back in the game in the home half of the first inning, leaving runners stranded on the corners after a leadoff double by Jakob Schardt followed by a single from Eli Lopez with no outs.Â
The Titans cut the deficit to 2-1 in the second inning on a bunt single by Moises Guzman to score Maddox Latta from third base.Â
The Aggies responded with two runs in the top of the third inning on a solo home run by Tyler Howard and an RBI single by Ryan Lee to take a 4-1 lead.Â
Guzman came through for the Titans again in the fourth inning with an RBI on a productive infield out to bring home Max Ortega and cut the deficit to 4-2.Â
UC Davis responded with one run in the fifth inning and one run in the sixth inning to extend its lead to 6-2.Â
Mikiah Negrete drew the loss for the Titans after giving up six runs (four earned) on 10 hits in 5.1 innings pitched. The lefty is now 4-4 on the year.Â
Guzman came through once again for the Titans in the eighth inning, this time with a two-run home run to right center field to make it a two run game, 6-4. Guzman went 3-for-4 with one run, four RBI and a walk.Â
UC Davis stopped the Titans momentum in the ninth inning, scoring one run to push its lead to 7-4 which it would not relinquish.
Fullerton looks to even the series with UC Davis in game two Saturday night at Goodwin Field. First pitch is scheduled for 5:00 p.m.
