Game Recap: Women's Water Polo |

Titans Earn First Conference Win in Program History at Home

FULLERTON, Calif. - Another first of many records were broken on Saturday as the Cal State Fullerton Titans womens' water polo team won their first ever Big West Conference contest after defeating No. 25 CSUN 5-4 at home on Sunday afternoon at the Titans Aquatics Center.Ā 

The Titans (10-15, 1-3 BWC) won the defensive battle against the Matadors to earn their second ever win over a ranked opponent.Ā Ā 

Shyanne Rainey led the Titans with two goals, Taylor Mason, Kieran Scout Bates, and Faith Cuevas also got on the scoresheet for the Titans.Ā  Annabelle Sherman came up huge in the cage with 10 saves to earn her first Big West victory.Ā Ā 

The Titans scored the first goal of the game as Shyanne Rainey scored within the first minute of the game.



The Matadors found an equalizer by the conference's leading goal scorer, Dorottya Telek who scored on a penalty to make it 1-1.Ā  However, the Titans scored on their ensuing possession as Kieran Scout Bates lobbed a shot over the goalkeeper to make it a 2-1 game.Ā Ā 



Neither side found the back of the net in the second quarter as the Titans nursed a 2-1 lead going into halftime.Ā Ā 

CSUN scored back-to-back goals in the 3rd period to take a 3-2 lead over the Titans.Ā  However, Shyanne Rainey was able to find an equalizer to make the game 3-3 heading into the final quarter.



Taylor Mason gave the Titans a 4-3 lead with 5:03 left in the game.Ā Ā 



With less than a minute remaining, the Matadors tried to run a 7-on-6 play with no goalkeeper.Ā  However, the Titans were able to snuff it out and found Faith Cuevas for the open net goal to make it 5-3.



The Matadors got a late consolation goal with 0:18 left in the game but the Titans were able to see out the final eighteen seconds to secure their first Big West conference win in program history.Ā Ā 

The Titans will head to UC Irvine next weekend with the match set to begin at 12 PM.Ā  The men's water polo team will play two spring games against the UCI men's water polo team at 10 AM and 2 PM before and after the women's game.Ā Ā
