Softball Sweeps Cal Poly in 6-0 Shutout Win

Titans record two home runs, two doubles and a triple in victory

FULLERTON, Calif. - Cal State Fullerton softball completed the sweep over Cal Poly in a 6-0 shutout victory on Sunday. The Titans lead the conference with a 32-15 overall record and an 18-3 record in conference play. They stand undefeated at home (9-0) with three sweeps.

The four-inning pitching duel came to an end in the bottom of the fifth inning when the Titans rallied for a 5-0 lead over the Mustangs. Candance Yingling opened the fifth inning off the bench with a single to left field. Yingling has recorded a hit 12 times in 25 at-bats as a pinch hitter this season. Bailey Wallace followed with an RBI double to left-center for a 1-0 lead over Cal Poly.

Sarah Perez (1-for-2, R) put down a bunt to the catcher for an infield single that advanced runners into scoring position for Hannah Becerra. The hit forced Cal Poly to turn to their bullpen with Becerra entering the box. Becerra (1-for-4, 2B, 2 RBI, R) continued the rally with a two-run double to left-center for a 3-0 lead.

Ava Arce (1-for-4, HR, 2 RBI, R) returned the favor, hitting her third home run of the season over the center field wall to score Becerra.

Mia Weckel led off the bottom of the sixth inning after entering in right field for Kate Verhoef at the top of the inning. Weckel launched her first home run of the season over the wall in left-center field for a 6-0 lead over the Mustangs.

Megan Delgadillo went 2-for-4 at the plate, tying Sue Lewis (1981-84) for the most career hits (257) by a Titan with an infield single to second base in the bottom of the sixth. Delgadillo opened the game with a triple for her 70th hit of the season but was left stranded at third base.

Haley Rainey (4.1 IP, 2 H, 3 BB, 5 K), Staci Chambers (2.0 IP, 1 H, 1 BB) and Leanna Garcia (0.2 IP, 1 H, 1 K) combined for a shutout performance in the circle. Chambers earned her 15th win of the season.

Softball travels to the University of Hawai'i for their final road series of the regular season. The Titans and Hawai'i will play a single game on Friday at 6:00 p.m. HT and a doubleheader on Saturday starting at 2:00 p.m. HT.
