FULLERTON, Calif. – Cal State Fullerton baseball dropped the series opening to CSUN Friday night at Goodwin Field by a final score of 9-6. The Titans are now 13-22 on the year and 5-11 in Big West play.Â
The Titans took a 1-0 lead in the first inning on a solo home run by Maddox Latta. The junior hit his third home run of the season after missing the last two games.Â
Fullerton added two runs in the second inning to take a 3-0 lead. With runners on the corners and one out, Waldie Perez laid down a perfect bunt to allow Colby Wallace to score from third. Latta then recorded his second RBI of the game on a sacrifice fly to drive in Jakob Schardt and put the Titans up 3-0.Â
CSUN quickly responded with four runs in the top of the third inning to take a 4-3 lead. The Matadors added one run in the fourth to extend their lead to 5-3.Â
After a scoreless frame in the fourth, Fullerton put up three runs in the fifth inning to retake the lead. With the bases loaded and one out, Alijah Ramos singled on a bunt to bring home Nico Regino.Â
Wallace then worked a walk with the bases loaded to tie the game at 5-5. One batter later, Schardt singled to left field to put the Titans ahead 6-5.Â
CSUN came back to take the lead with four-run inning in the top half of the seventh to take a 9-6 lead which it would hold on to for the remainder of the game.Â
Mikiah Negrete got no decision in his start after giving up five runs on 10 hits in five innings pitched. Jason Krakoski got the loss to drop to 2-1 on the year. The Freshman allowed three runs on one hit in 0.1 innings pitched.Â
Fullerton looks to even the series in game two Saturday evening at Goodwin Field. First pitch is scheduled for 5:00 p.m.
