AZUSA, Calif. — Alexis Garcia broke his own school record in the men's 5000m to highlight Cal State Fullerton outdoor track and field's showing Friday at the Bryan Clay Invitational.
Garcia became the first Titan ever to run the 5000m in under 14 minutes, clocking in at 13:56.02. His time is nearly eight seconds faster than his previous school record of 14:03.99. Garcia placed fifth in the third heat in section A of the open men's 5000m.
Marco Perez clocked a 14:12.84 in the same event, becoming the third fastest Titan to run the 5000m. He finished 18th in the first heat of competition. Nathaniel Avila, running in section B of the open men's 5000m, posted a 14:19.68. He is now the sixth fastest Titan ever to run the event.
Jonathan Pfeiffer, the current school record holder in the 800m, clocked a 1:51.32 in the men's 800m invite Friday to place 90th. On the women's side, Ashlynn Viramontes led the way for Fullerton in the 800m with a 2:13.42, finishing 95th. Olivia Ruiz (2:14.74) followed in 124th and Nanette Novak (2:15.57) placed 144th.
Mia Bergman clocked in at 16:35.94 in heat four and section A of the women's 5000m, placing 16th. Jicel Fernandez posted a 17:43.06 in section B of the event and finished 74th.
In the women's hammer throw, Evalen Garcia threw a 46.63m and placed 23rd. Sahira Lepes-Sanchez followed in 26th with a 44.66m, while Teresa Chang finished 27th with a 44.14m.
Enrique Lara led the way for Fullerton in the men's high jump after clearing a height of 1.93m. He finished 15th overall. Camren Willis followed in 16th, clearing 1.88m.
Talman Young also posted a time of 8:53.97 in the men's 3000m steeplechase as the Titans' lone athlete to compete last night.
Fullerton returns for a final day of action at the Bryan Clay Invitational tomorrow, Saturday, Apr. 13.
