Softball Defeats UCSD Twice in Friday Doubleheader

A sixth-inning comeback and complete-game shutout power Titans to series win

FULLERTON, Calif. - Cal State Fullerton Titans Softball secured their fifth conference series win of the season at home against UC San Diego after defeating the Tritons 4-3 and 2-0 in a doubleheader on Friday night. The Titans improve to 26-14 on the season and stand 12-2 in Big West play. 

Cal State Fullerton 4, UC San Diego 3

The Titans started the series with a win after a three-run, sixth-inning gave the Titans their first lead of the game. 

UC San Diego got an early 2-0 lead in the first inning after putting together three hits off Haley Rainey. 

Kate Verhoef (2-for-3, RBI) brought the game within a run in the bottom of the fourth inning with a single to left field that scored Peyton Toto (3-for-3, 2B, 2 R). 



The Tritons jumped to another two-run lead in the fifth inning with an RBI single. Trailing 3-1, after five innings, the Titans scored three runs on three hits and two errors in the bottom of the sixth. 

Toto led off the inning with a single up the middle, and Colby McClinton reached on a throwing error that scored Toto. Alexia Lopez sent a ball into right field to tie the game at 3-3 before Megan Delgadillo hit the game-winning single to left field.



Rainey pitched a complete game for her 13th win of the season. Rainey allowed seven hits and three runs through seven, all of which were earned. She hit two batters and was one strikeout shy of tying her career-best with nine strikeouts. 

Cal State Fullerton 2, UC San Diego 0

Hannah Becerra powered the Titans to their 2-0 victory with a two-run home run over the wall in left-center field. Becerra drove in Delgadillo (2-for-3, R, SB) while collecting her sixth home run of the season and her 36th as a Titan. She sits ranked third in Titan history for most career home runs. 



Staci Chambers pitched her third complete-game shutout of the season in Fullerton's 2-0 win. Chambers earned her 11th win after giving up one hit and striking out eight batters. She has not allowed a run in the last 17 innings and has kept her opponents to five hits. Chambers holds a 2.23 overall ERA, sitting second-best in The Big West behind teammate Rainey (1.82). 

The Titans look for their third series sweep of the season against the Tritons on Saturday at 1:00 p.m.
