Titans Fall 5-4 to San Diego State

Softball struggles to defend 4-2 lead given by Becerra (1B, 2 RBI)

FULLERTON, Calif. - The Cal State Fullerton Titans softball team fell 5-4 to San Diego State on Saturday night. The Titans are 13-10 on the season and 2-1 at their last tournament before conference play begins. 

The Aztecs jumped ahead of the Titans (2-0) heading into the bottom of the third inning after a double in the second inning and a single in the third drove in two runs. 

Fullerton responded with four runs in the bottom of the third inning to take a 4-2 lead over San Diego State. Megan Delgadillo started the scoring with a triple down the right field line, driving in Kate Verhoef. Bailey Wallace returned the favor for Delgadillo, bringing the tying run home with a base hit into left field. 
 

Hannah Becerra continued the momentum later in the inning with a two-run single that scored Jessi Alcala and Kristalyn Romulo. 
 

The Titans maintained their 4-2 lead over the Aztecs until San Diego State found two runs in the fifth inning off Haley Rainey, who pitched in relief of Staci Chambers. Chambers exited the circle after 2 1/3 innings (5 H, 2 ER, BB, 3 K). Ford and her coaching staff returned to a left-handed pitcher in the sixth inning, calling Leanna Garcia to pitch for Rainey (3.0 IP, 3 H, 2 R, 1 ER, 2 BB, 2 K). Garcia earned her third loss of the season after allowing a base hit to center field that drove in the winning run for the Aztecs. 

The Titans end their 2024 tournament schedule against Yale University on Sunday at 12:30 p.m. This will be the final game before the Titans hit the road for a trip to Davis, Calif. for a three-game series against UC Davis on March 15-16.
