Titans Win Big West Series Opener at UC Davis

Haley Rainey holds the Aggies to one hit in run-rule victory

DAVIS, Calif. - The Cal State Fullerton Titans softball team opened Big West play with a series win over UC Davis after run-ruling the Aggies 9-0 in five innings on Saturday. The Titans hold the best team batting average (1.92) in the conference following the win, edging Cal Poly (.291) to second. They improved to 16-11 overall and stand 2-1 in conference play.

Megan Delgadillo turned on the first pitch of the game for a triple up the middle. Jessi Alcala drove in Delgadillo with a sacrifice fly for an early 1-0 lead over the Aggies.

Alcala drove in two extra runs in the third inning with a double that scored Delgadillo and Kate Verhoef. Verhoef reached first safely on an infield single before Delgadillo drew a walk and advanced to second base earlier that inning.

Hannah Becerra and Peyton Toto joined in on the rally in the fourth inning with back-to-back singles into the left side of the outfield. Colby McClinton followed with a double that scored Becerra and advanced Toto to third base.

The Titans followed with five more runs off the six hits and three errors in the fourth inning to take a 9-0 lead. Delgadillo scored her third run of the game within the inning to tie assistant coach Gina Oaks Garcia for the most career runs scored (150) in program history.

Haley Rainey had no-hitter going through four innings until a ball got through the hot corner for a single down the left field line. The runner was called out at second base on the play. Rainey added four strikeouts to her stat line and walked two batters. Rainey (7-4) holds a 1.93 ERA, the lowest in The Big West.

Softball will continue their road stand at Cal State Bakersfield Saturday, March 23 and Sunday, March 24. They play a doubleheader on Saturday at noon and 2:30 p.m. before finishing the weekend on Sunday at noon.
