LA JOLLA, Calif. ā Cal State Fullerton Baseball let a six run lead slip away to UC San Diego, losing by a final score of 10-9 Saturday afternoon at Triton Ballpark. With the loss the Titans drop to 8-9 on the year.Ā
The Titans jumped out to an early 5-0 lead after plating five runs in the top of the first inning. Fullerton scored the first three runs of the inning on two errors by the UCSD defense.Ā
With runners on the corners and one out, Draven Nushida laid down a perfect sacrifice bunt to bring home Colby Wallace. One batter later, Luke Mistone recorded his first RBI of the season to score Matthew Bardowell and extend the Titans lead to 5-0.Ā
UC San Diego responded in the home half of the first inning with two runs on two solo home runs to cut the Titans lead to 5-2.Ā Ā
Fullerton responded in the top of the second inning to get one run back on an RBI single by Maddox Latta to bring home Eli Lopez.Ā
The Tritons cut the Titans lead to 6-3 with one run in the bottom half of the third inning.Ā
The Titans put up another crooked number in the fifth inning, scoring three runs on three hits. Marcos Rosales led off the inning with a single before a triple off the wall from Wallace brought him home to put Fullerton up 7-3.Ā
Matthew Bardowell and Draven Nushida then drew back-to-back walks to load the bases with no outs. Luke Mistone hit a deep fly ball to left field to score Wallace on a sacrifice fly, for his second RBI of the game, to make it a 8-3 Titans lead.Ā
With runners on first and second, Waldie Perez drove the ball to deep left center field to bring home Bardowell and extend the lead to 9-3.Ā
UC San Diego scored two runs in the bottom of the sixth inning to cut the Titans lead to 9-5. The Tritons added two more runs on back-to-back solo home runs in the seventh to make it a 9-7 game.Ā
The Tritons plated three runs in the eighth inning to take a 10-9 lead. UCSD scored the tying and go-ahead runs on a two-run home run.Ā
Christian Rodriguez had a solid start for the Titans, allowing three runs on six hits in five innings of work while walking two and striking out five batters.Ā
The Titans look to bounce back Sunday afternoon in the series-deciding game three at UC San Diego. First pitch is scheduled for 1:00 p.m. PT.
