RIVERSIDE, Calif. — Cal State Fullerton outdoor track and field opened the 2024 season with a successful showing at the Riverside City College Invitational Friday.Â
The Titans' 1500m men's and women's competitors highlighted the day, as Fullerton swept both events. In the women's 1500m, Mia Bergman claimed gold with a time of 4:37.85 while Jicel Fernandez followed with a 4:45.55. Bella Smith took third after clocking a 4:46.71. Destiny Lopez, Kalei Chance and Amy Brown each followed in the 4-6 spots.Â
Nathaniel Avila led the way in the men's 1500m, winning the event with a time of 3:55.97. JT McCoy took second with a 3:57.48 and Alexis Garcia finished third with a time of 3:57.90. Talman Young finished sixth while Justin Singer placed eighth in the event.Â
In the women's 100m hurdles, Mariah Stewart earned second place after running a 14.43. Ileen Emerson followed in third with a 14.46. Destine'e Reid earned silver in the women's 200m, clocking a time of 25.70.Â
For the men's throwers, Justice Mephors finished second in the men's hammer throw after posting a mark of 48.56m. Mephors also claimed silver in the men's discus, throwing for 47.07m.Â
As a team, the Titan women finished third overall with a total of 96 points while the men took fifth with 61.Â
Up next, Fullerton will host the Ben Brown Invite next Friday and Saturday, Mar. 8-9, at the Titan Track Complex.Â
