Titans Defeat Michigan, Get No-Hit by No. 13 Florida

Jessi Alcala (2-for-6, R, 3 RBI) led Titans offense

FULLERTON, Calif. - Cal State Fullerton Titans Softball defeated Michigan 5-1 and fell 9-0 to No.13 in a five-inning no-hitter in front of a total of 664 fans on Day One of the Judi Garman Classic. The Titans stand 10-7 on the season and are 1-1 at the tournament.

Cal State Fullerton 5, Michigan 1

RHP Haley Rainey earned her third win in the circle after pitching a two-hit, one-run ballgame against Michigan. Rainey and her defense silenced the Wolverines from crossing home plate until the fifth inning when Michigan scored their only run off a wild pitch.

The Titans jumped on the board in the bottom of the first inning with an RBI single through the left side by Jessi Alcala (2-for-4, R, 3 RBI). Megan Delgadillo scored on the play after reaching on a base hit herself and stealing her 13th base of the season. Delgadillo has 220 career stolen bases and is two away from breaking The Big West career stolen base record.

Jessi Alcala smashed a ball over the left field wall for a two-run home run, scoring Bailey Wallace (walk).

Hannah Becerra followed with a single to left center and stole second base. Becerra advanced to third on a ground out by Ava Arce before Peyton Toto earned a base on balls and stole a bag for herself. Becerra scored the fourth run for the Titans on a throwing error by Michigan's catcher.

The Titans extended their lead 5-0 over the Wolverines in the fifth on a fielder's choice RBI by Jazmin Williams. Michigan responded in the sixth with a run scored on a wild pitch by Rainey before the Titans secured a 5-1 win for their 10th victory of the season.

#13 Florida 9, Cal State Fullerton 0 (5 innings)

LHP Staci Chambers (5-3) started in the circle for the Titans, recording all three outs in the first inning with strikeouts. The third batter she face sent a ball through her legs and into the outfield for a base hit.

The score remained 0-0 through three innings until the Gators got a piece of Chambers, putting up six runs against the left-hander. Ashleigh Dendas entered in relief of Chambers and allowed three more runs, two of which were earned, to put the Gators within run-rule territory (9-0). Trisha McCleskey was called from the bullpen and got out of the inning with no further damage.

The Titans did not get a hit off Florida's Keagan Rothrock, getting no-hit for the first time this season. This was the first time the Titans earned a mercy rule loss this season and the first time the program suffered a five-inning loss in over a year (vs. No. 1 Oklahoma at the Mary Nutter on Feb. 24, 2023).
