IRVINE, Calif. – Cal State Fullerton men's soccer fell to UC Irvine in the first round of the Big West Championship by a final score of 1-0 Wednesday night.
Neither team had any quality score chances in the first half as both sides were trying to feel out the game. The Titans had six shots (one on goal) while UC Irvine had four shots (two on goal) in the first half.
Fullerton started to ramp up the pressure late in the first half and into the second half but just were unable to find great scoring opportunities in the final third.
The Titans best opportunity came in the 72nd minute as Fitz Williams drove the ball down sideline and sent a great pass into the box that found the foot of Sulaiman Bah. Bah hit a quick one-timer but the UCI defender was able to get a deflection to keep the ball out of the back of the net.
UC Irvine took the lead in the 80th minute of play on a tough angle shot by Misael Gonzalez. Following a deep throw-in for the Anteaters, the ball bounced around the Titans 18-yard box before Gonzalez found the ball and made a move past the Fullerton defender near the end line.
The Titans gave it their all to find the equalizer late in the game but ultimately were unable to get a quality look on goal.
Going into next season, Titans will have to replace several key players in Brandon Limes, Giovanni Gloria, Matthias Heiland, Mario Carlos, Erick Serrano, Sulaiman Bah, Jonathan Grado, Roberto and Jorge Quintero.
