Men's Basketball Drops Season Opener at Grand Canyon

PHOENIX – Cal State Fullerton men's basketball dropped its season opener on the road to Grand Canyon by a final of 89-79 Monday night at Global Credit Union Arena.

The Titans had an inauspicious start to the game, falling behind 7-0. However, Fullerton quickly got in the groove and went on a 6-0 run of its own to get right back in the game.

First-year transfer Kaleb Brown made an immediate impact in the first half, scoring nine straight points for the Titans off the bench. Brown had 14 in the first half on 5-of-6 shooting including 2-of-3 from behind the arc.

Trailing 47-42 with time winding down in the first half, Antwan Robinson hit a buzzer-beater three to pull the Titans within two heading into the locker room.

Grand Canyon slowly started to pull away in the second half, leading by as many as 20 points. Fullerton fought hard to get back in the game but were only able to cut the lead down to 10 points.

The Titans shot well from the field, shooting 48 percent on 24-of-50 while shooting an impressive 41 percent from three-point range.

Offensive rebounds and second chance points ultimately plagued the Titans throughout the game and in the second half. Grand Canyon grabbed 16 offensive rebounds leading to 20 second chance points.

After scoring 14 points in the first half, Brown went on to score a team-high 17 points on 6-of-7 shooting and 3-of-4 from deep. Donovan Oday added 12 points while Keith Richard and Zion Richardson added 10 points.

Fullerton is back on the road Friday as the team heads to Northern California to take on the Stanford Cardinal. Tip-off is scheduled for 1:00 p.m.
