FULLERTON, Calif. - The Cal State Fullerton Titans women's soccer team drew with Cal State Bakersfield in their regular season finale 1-1 at home on Thursday night at Titan Stadium.
The Titans finished the regular season with a 6-9-4 overall record and 4-3-3 record in conference play. The Titans ended up finishing in sixth place and clinching the final spot in the 6-team Big West Conference Championship. The Titans and Roadrunners were tied in the 1st tiebreaker (head-to-head), 2nd tiebreaker (goal differential in conference play), 3rd tiebreaker (goals conceded in conference play), and it came down to the fourth tiebreaker which was total goals scored all season. The Roadrunners had 23 goals and the Titans had 22 goals scored.Â
The Titans were the aggressors early as they had six shots and six corner kicks within the first 20 minutes of the game. Â
Isabella Cruz broke the deadlock with her fourth goal of the season in the 23rd minute. She took a deflected ball from a Bakersfield midfielder and took on two Roadrunners defenders and she was able to muscle off one of the defenders and found space to score and put the Titans ahead 1-0.
However, the Roadrunners scored out of nothing in the 41st minute. A freekick from Paige Rodriguez found an open Cynthia Ramirez for a header in front of goal and the Roadrunners equalized before halftime.
The Titans came out of halftime looking for a second goal to put them on top and earn the right to host a 1st round Big West Championship game on Sunday but they could only come agonizingly close. Â
Lauren Turner had a shot go wide that missed the goal by a few feet. Â
Kaylee Noble stole the ball off the Roadrunner's goalkeeper pass and had a shot saved in the 55th minute. Â She later had another opportunity where her shot hit the underside of the crossbar but it clanged off the post. Â
The Titans outshot the Roadrunners 19-to-8 for the game with 5 shots on goal and the Roadrunners had 3 shots on goal. The Titans earned 13 corner kicks while CSUB had 2 corner kicks. Kamy Anaya made four saves for the Roadrunners while Ranson made two saves for the game for the Titans.Â
The Titans will be on the road for the rest of the Big West Championship. Their quest for the title begins on Sunday at No. 3 UC Santa Barbara. The winner of that game will head to Hawai'i where they will take on No. 2 UC Davis on Thursday's semifinal.
