FULLERTON, Calif. — Despite double-digit kills from Ameena Campbell, Aubrey Beaver and Bianca Martinez, Cal State Fullerton women's volleyball fell in four sets (23-25, 25-23, 16-25, 13-25) to California Baptist at home on Saturday.
The match was the Titans' second and final of the Big West/WAC Showdown and the result moves the team's record to 1-8 on the season.
Campbell tallied 14 kills on a .237 clip to go with 16 digs on the night, good for 14 total points. Beaver also had 14 kills on a .119 hitting percentage while adding eight digs and two assists. Martinez followed with 13 kills on a team-best .357 clip.
As a team, Fullerton hit at a .220 percentage to the Lancers' .329 clip, as the Titans had 20 attack errors to CBU's 10. The Lancers out-blocked Fullerton 15-3 in the match.
After falling behind 16-10 in the first set, the Titans clawed their way back to make it a 18-17 game following kills from Beaver and Aaliyah Fasavalu. Fullerton later staved off four consecutive set points with kills from Martinez and Campbell, but the Lancers eventually took it 25-23.
The Titans got out to a 10-2 advantage early in set two, with Martinez, Beaver and Campbell leading the effort with kills. Another Campbell kill later gave Fullerton a 19-11 advantage. CBU came back to make it a 23-21 game, but a Beaver kill sealed the 25-23 set-two win for the TItans.
Martinez powered home a ball from Garis to give Fullerton a 6-2 advantage in the third. The Lancers, though, came back to take a 14-9 lead. CBU maintained control throughout, winning the third set 25-16 to take a 2-1 match lead.
Laura Williams notched a pair of kills midway through the fourth set, but the Lancers maintained control with a 16-11 advantage. CBU scored six straight to take a 24-12 lead before sealing the set and the 3-1 match win.
The Titans open Big West play next weekend at home, first taking on UC Davis on Friday, Sept. 22, at 6:00 p.m. PT.
