FULLERTON, Calif. – Cal State Fullerton men's water polo fought until the end in their 16-9 loss to No. 11 UC San Diego on Friday night. This matchup marked Fullerton's first-ever Big West home opener and was met with a crowded pool deck full of fellow student-athletes, family and friends. The Titans now stand 15-9 on the season and 0-2 in Big West play.Â
Togan Ozbek, one of the team's leading scorers (43, tied with
Julian Nichols), beat the Tritons to the board on a one-man advantage for an early 1-0 lead.
UC San Diego worked their way to a 3-1 lead over the Titans, but
Will Johnson capitalized on another power-play opportunity to bring the score to 3-2.Â

Fullerton kept with this pace, putting two more goals on the board in the second quarter.
Bende Aubeli and
Nico D'Angelo were awarded said goals, scoring both while up a man. All four goals scored in the first half came on a power-play, sending the Titans into halftime trailing the Tritons 10-4.Â

After the break, the Titans and Tritons found the net three times each.
Ethan Cooney opened the half with a back-handed completion pass to half the UCSD's lead, 10-5.Â

Ozbek added his second goal of the game from the outside to keep the Titans at a healthy deficit, 12-6, in the third quarter.Â
His final tally of the game was a power-play goal. Down 16-7,
Bende Aubeli kept with the theme of halving UCSD's lead, 16-8.Â
Aaron Ayala grabbed the game's last goal to bring the Titans within seven goals of the ranked Big West opponent.

While awarded a loss, the inaugural team continues to prove to themselves, their fans and opponents that they can compete with veteran teams this season.Â
The Titans are set to turn around and host Concordia on Saturday at 7 p.m., just 24 hours after this match. Concordia is 7-11 on the season.Â
