FULLERTON, Calif. - Cal State Fullerton fell behind early and never recovered as it suffered a 5-0 Big West Conference loss to Cal Poly Thursday night at Goodwin Field.
The Mustangs (10-16, 1-0) blasted three home runs against the Titans (14-14, 2-2) and got a masterful performance from starter Casey Bloomquist in the victory. Fullerton stranded 10 base runners on the night and had just three runners get into scoring position.
Bloomquist outdueled Titans starter Thomas Eshelman on Thursday night. The Mustangs ace went seven and 2/3 innings and scattered six hits, five of them singles. He walked three and struck out five.
Eshelman recorded his seventh quality start of the year, going six innings and allowing four runs, three earned. He struck out one on the night, a season low.
Tyler Stieb went 2-for-4 on the night for Fullerton and Josh Vargas was 1-for-3 with his first career triple, the only Fullerton extra-base hit on the night.
For the Mustangs, Brian Mundell blasted two solo home runs and Ryan Drobny was 2-for-4 with a single and a two-run homer.
The Mustangs jumped out to a 1-0 lead in the first inning as Mundell hit a solo home run that snuck over the left field wall with two outs and a full count against Eshelman.
Cal Poly added to its lead in the second on another big fly as Drobny worked the count full against Eshelman and blasted a two-run home run off the top of the right-field foul pole to put the Mustangs ahead 3-0.
The Mustangs added an unearned run in the third inning to make it 4-0 and it stayed that way until the eighth inning, when Mundell went yard again off reliever Connor Seabold to deep left-center to put Cal Poly up 5-0.
The teams will return to the mound Friday night as Justin Garza takes the mound for Fullerton while left-hander Kyle Smith gets the ball for Cal Poly. First pitch is scheduled for 7 p.m.
Notes: Mundell was the first Fullerton opponent to register a multi-home run game since Phil Holinsworth of UC Riverside belted two home runs against the Titans on May 19, 2012. That also happened at Goodwin Field… Bloomquist has now pitched 16 and 2/3 scoreless innings in his career against the Titans… David Olmedo-Barrera's seven-game hitting streak was snapped on Thursday. He did reach base safely for the 13th consecutive game… Stieb recorded his ninth multi-hit game of the season for Fullerton, tops on the team… The Titans were shutout for the third time this season.
