Shondell Reed was appointed the Cal State Fullerton Director of Athletics in August of 2026.
A native of Harbor City, Calif., Reed received his bachelors of arts degree in communications (journalism) from Cal State Fullerton in 1995.
Reed, a veteran collegiate athletics administrator with more than 20 years of experience in various roles, came to Cal State Fullerton after spending the past five years at Air Force as a senior associate athletics director.
While at Air Force, Reed oversaw seven varsity sport programs (men’s basketball, women’s basketball, men’s soccer, women’s soccer, fencing, rifle and men’s lacrosse). That oversight includes supporting those coaching staffs with their annual administrative functions, including scheduling, budgeting and travel.
Prior to his time at Air Force, Reed served eight years as senior associate athletic director at the University of Washington. At UW, he was the lead sport administrator for seven varsity programs (m/w basketball, m/w soccer, m/w tennis, and men’s rowing). He also had additional oversight of the compliance staff, strength/conditioning staff, athletic training staff, equipment staff and the athletic department’s Nike partnership.
From 2004 to 2012, Reed served as the senior associate athletic director at Colgate University. He was responsible for the athletic department’s internal operations and served as liaison to the Office of Advancement, Office of Admission and Financial Aid. He also served as sport administrator for the football, men’s basketball, women’s soccer, tennis and rowing programs. On campus, Reed served as a member of the Faculty Affairs Committee. Reed also served as acting athletic director in the Spring 2010 semester.
Reed currently serves on the NCAA Rifle Committee. He also has previous experience in intercollegiate athletics governance and policymaking at the conference level and nationally having served as member of the Pac-12 rules working group, President of the Intercollegiate Rowing Association Board of Stewards and was a member of the NCAA Cross Country and Track & Field Committee. He was also a member of the Board of Directors for the Minorities Opportunities Athletic Association (MOAA) and continues to serve on MOAA’s Rules Education/Professional Development subcommittee.
Reed has completed a number of leadership development opportunities, including Sport Management Institute (2006), D-IA Institute (2012), NCAA Pathway Program (2014) and the Collegiate Athletics Leadership Symposium (CALS)(2014).
After graduating from Cal State Fullerton in 1995, Reed went on to earn his Juris Doctor from Seattle University School of Law and a master's degree in sport management from the University of San Francisco. He began his collegiate athletics career in the athletic departments at UC Berkeley and then The Ohio State University.
