Melanie Abella begins her first year as an undergraduate assistant coach with the Cal State Fullerton women’s tennis program.
In her final season of collegiate competition in 2014, Abella completed the year with an overall mark of 0-5 in singles play, while playing in just one dual singles match during the spring for the Titans.
In doubles competition, she played with three different partners and completed the year with a record of 4-10 overall and 4-9 in dual doubles play. Abella played four matches with Megan Sandford at No. 3 doubles, finishing 0-4, played nine matches with Kalika Slevcove at No. 3 doubles, recording a 4-5 record and notching wins over Colorado State, Amherst, New Mexico State and UC Riverside.
Abella played her sophomore season at Fullerton Junior College under head coach Scott Giles. She finished doubles play 11-0 and placed third at the state championships. She was also the No. 2 singles player for the Hornets after spending her freshman season at Concordia University.
A 2009 graduate of Esperanza High School in Anaheim, Calif., Abella played at the varsity level for four years under head coach Rey Cejano. She finished third in Sunset League singles action during her freshman and sophomore seasons, respectively, and as a junior, placed second in the league in singles play as the squad’s No. 1 player and reached the league finals in doubles play.
Abella was named first team all-league following her senior season after finishing second in league during singles play along with a second straight finals appearance in double play.
Abella is majoring in child development with the goal of becoming a special education teacher and high school tennis coach.
